Movies

The original has the best script by a huge distance and a formal elegance that gives it the feel of a classic, but the fight/chase scenes in Reloaded are more fun to watch and the score is better.

Revolutions is just a long slog that focuses way too much on side characters that don’t have much depth. It grinds you down with repetitive robot fighting to the point that you’re just kind of exhausted and apathetic about the climactic finale.

Resurrections tries to do a lot of different things - it succeeds in making the franchise feel fresh and relevant but jumps around so much that you never get the thrill of anticipating what will happen next that made the first two movies so engaging.

But like... What if... *takes hit from bong* the Matrix sequels are like just the robots trying to get us to talk about how good or bad they are as sequels and stuff so that we don't like rise up and unplug from the Matrix, maaaan?

Honestly I've been a fan of the Wachowski projects I have seen, so not sure why I've procrastinated on the Matrix. It just always seemed like one of things that wouldn't live up to the hype I guess. I try to avoid starting too many franchises at once, but maybe before 2022 is out I'll give the series a chance.

I teach the first three Matrix films pretty regularly and I think the fourth will be a good one to assign too. But since I don't want to put my brain in work mode, I'll just say I enjoy them all for different reasons, some of which have been mentioned here.

And the real thing I came to post is this. And yes, I'd definitely watch it.

As someone who didn't care much for the first Jurassic World, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Fallen Kingdom was way more over-the-top and insane than I was expecting. I guess it got pretty bad reviews, but whatever. I like to have fun when I watch movies.

Finally watched Old on HBO the other night. I liked it well enough, but The Village is still my favorite work of his.

I fail horribly at actually watching new(er) movies. I was clicking around HBO Max last night thinking I would try something new and.. oh, I Know What You Did Last Summer for the umpteenth time.

"Why don't you watch something new, huh?"

I watched the original Top Gun all the way through yesterday for the first time in at least 25 years. It’s still fun.

I did the same the other day. I have to say that it kind of felt....average?

I know technology was more limited at the time but for the flight/action scenes it kind of felt like they just filmed some planes randomly flying and then knitted together that part of the story based on that.

The only reason I liked it as a kid was because a friend's dad had a killer sound system that would make the walls shake and that made it fun. But plot-wise, I preferred Hot Shots! 😂

I caught it a few months ago and saved it on the DVR. It is fun movie, and growing up a military brat I've always gone crazy over planes. To think of what I was doing at 26 and then there's Tom Cruise staring in Top Gun.. oy.

Yeah, the movie plot wise is a big cheesefest but I absolutely love the fighter jet scenes. Maybe it’s the fact that is wasn’t all CGI nonsense but just being in the cockpit with the pilots and the watching the planes zip around the screen was enthralling for me. I am sure the editing was done just as described but that still worked for me, it advanced the story and I gotta see F-15’s fly around without having to go to an air show.

I think we will eventually be heading to the theater for this one. It looks like our movie theater is sort of open.
