Movies

saw Uncharted because it popped up on Netflix - it was not bad. Not usually one for movies based on video game franchises and not the best action adventure explorer movie but its a good watch IMO. But yeah. this movie has Air-Ship pirate battles what more do you want?
And whoever wrote the dialogue in this movie wrote the cheesiest lines - particularly with Tom Holland's character.

Just plugging Christos Nikou’s Apples, now that it’s finally available for on-demand viewing. It’s fairly melancholy and requires a little patience, but it’s pretty funny and weird and charming. It confused me the first time I saw it, but I loved it the second time through. Nikou (according to his Letterboxd bio) has worked on films with Yorgos Lanthimos and Richard Linklater, and I feel like those are decent indicators of what kind of ride you’re in for.

Letterboxd just interviewed the director and the writer of the article quoted [a somewhat spoiler-y part of] my review! According to Letterboxd, less than 10k people have watched the film, and only 1.6k have written reviews - and mine just happens to be the 3rd most popular review right now (just behind David Ehrlich).

Shoutout to @siremobunny for recommending the film as well as the virtual Chicago Film Festival to me back in 2020 so I could be one of the first to see it (which, it turns out, is key to getting lots of likes on your film reviews).

This was a fun and interesting film. Watch it.

Basically what this comes down to is accounting and tax write offs.

They are using covid related funds and tax credits, which in good faith should be used for movies where production was canceled because of covid. Not because production was canceled because they think the movie (Batgirl) was going to be a flop. Or in the case of the HBO MAX original movies already released and on HBO Max, remove under performing movies from the platform for a tax credit.

Movies made from streaming are expected to generate revenue and pay themselves off over a period of years. 7 years let's say. Their performance shows that they will not recover their money over said period of time. So, by removing them from their platform now they are able to write them off. The movies are essentially abandoned / lost by Warner Media / Discovery.

What if someone actually liked one of these movies and wanted to watch it again. Or wanted to watch one and haven't gotten the chance to yet. Yup. You are SOL. It's gone. No longer streaming and not available to purchase anywhere.

not available to purchase anywhere.

FWIW it looks like all six of those movies are available to purchase on VUDU.

But VUDU was completely down for several hours last night so I’m not recommending that anyone follow my lead and sink a lot of money into buying a bunch of movies and shows on there.

If anyone wants a cool music-related film set in the Columbus, OH music scene (narrative, not documentary, although I understand it stars real musicians from that scene), I recommend renting Poser...saw it last year during Tribeca and it was a fun ride.

Thanks,

I'll have to check out this movie over the weekend. Looks to be $14.99 to buy on all the digital platforms. No 4k or physical media. $4.99 to rent.

Not surprising that there's no 4k available...it's an indie.

Actually it is. 4K video editing has been the standard for more than a decade. 8k is now the standard. Amateurs / indie are also more likely to release content in these higher quality formats than major studios.

I can almost guarantee you the master is either 4k or 8k.

Content not being released in 4K these days almost always comes down to licenses agreements, wanting more money for 4k. Or the fear of piracy. Hence why you can't download 4k content from Apple, only stream. Studios don't allow it because they don't want to take the risk that someone rips it.

I imagine it probably costs the studio more to have 4k content hosted by vod services. I don't think Oscilloscope has ever released a film on 4k in a physical format either.

Got a free ticket to see Bodies Bodies Bodies from A24, so I'm heading out to the theater in a bit for the earliest showing today. I would have waited till it showed up streaming or something, but hey I won't turn down a free ticket.

I have one of those free tickets too, but the closest theater playing it is a half hour away, so I'm on the fence:p

Rather salty that both of my local theaters decided to book some body switching comedy with Diane Keaton in it that's about to make less than $1m in wide release over Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Who's gonna turn down a couple hours looking at a shirtless Lee Pace on the big screen.
