Movies

Here a list that mainly made me realize how many Adam Sandler movies there are and how many I never new existed…

They do mess up the #1 selection however.

Also, the fact that Al Pacino costarring, Jack & Jill couldn’t crack the top 50 speaks volumes.

It's #49

Looks like this is every movie he’s ever been in. I’d probably flip 1 and 2 or 1 and 4. Solid top 10 nevertheless

This festival season, specifically Venice and Telluride which are happening right now, is proving to be very exciting. Several movies like All of Us Strangers, and Yorgos Lanthomos' new one Poor Things getting major raves. Wes Anderson's Henry Sugar short, Coppola's Priscilla movie, Alexander Payne's The Holdovers, Fincher's The Killer, Bradley Cooper's Maestro, Michael Mann's Ferrari, ALL getting good to great reviews. This isn't even considering stuff that's already critically acclaimed like Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, May December, The Zone of Interest and more. Gonna be an amazing Fall for movies.

Midsommar - Director's Cut

I bought this but haven't watched it yet! I quite liked the theatrical cut.

I've been sick for a few days, so I spent this weekend chipping away at the backlog, mostly early Makoto Shinkai movies, but also Penguin Highway (odd but delightful) and Barking Dogs Never Bite (Bong's Blood Simple).

The number threw me until I clicked through and realized this includes all performances, starring or not.

I saw Jack & Jill at 49; they should prolly swap it with Men, Women, and Children.

Granted I haven't seen many of these movies, but the ratings seem downright random. Punch-Drunk is rated way too low!

Been making my way through the Planet of the Apes franchise in recent years. I've only the last of the original run left aside from the most recent entry. I used to find the lengthy title format laughable, but it's grown on me now that I've experienced the series. It's nice when new installments are good these days and show a clear reverence for their origins.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a fantastic feat. It feels so much like the best parts of the classics with a massively audacious visual edge, fit for modern day.

The Magnificent Seven remake - I like it a bit more than the original. Much more interesting gunmen, more evil villain. Maybe not as interesting as he was basically just a greedy asshole who took whatever he wanted while the Eli Wallach character in the original was worried about feeding his men...while taking whatever he wanted.

I finally saw Across the Spiderverse.

Maybe it's just me, but I found the pedal-to-the-metal pacing waaay to fast and I was missing stuff left and right. Characters would just be introduced, say an incomprehensible line, and be gone in the span of two seconds. Felt like I was watching the film at double speed....and it's still almost 2 and a half hours. Am I just getting old?

Nah you're not the only one. The fact that it's one half of a movie, and the mile-a-minute nonstop references and jokes kinda dampen the emotional effect. Not as good as the first but the entertainment value and animation still make it great.
