Movies

Watched a couple of good movies over the last few weeks I really enjoyed....

The Holdovers and American Fiction. I enjoyed both and they both had great casts giving great performances.

I enjoyed The Holdovers just a bit more, but really it's fruitless to compare them since they aren't really related by anything other than the proximity that I saw them from one another.

The Holdovers had a kind of nostalgic feel being set in the 70's (right, that's the decade it is in?) and also being over Christmas (without being quite a Christmas movie IMO).

I also saw the new Deadpool in theaters (it was either that or Longlegs and my buddy didn't wanna see Longlegs). It was probably the first time I'd been in a theater in 3 or 4 years. It was good. As good as the first two Deadpools, which were....good. But, let's be honest, these are the energy drinks of movies. I will say the cameos were pretty tight. I had to explain to my buddy why Tanning Chatum (no spoilers from me!) was there as a character he didn't remember in any of the movies. Also Ersatz Dean Cain was a highlight.

I wondered why a movie with that much star power based on a popular video game franchise was being given minimal promotion and unceremoniously released in the dog days of summer. I guess Liongate recognizes a turkey when they see one.

Directed by Eli Roth. Huh.

The Chinese market sometimes enjoys our crappy action movies maybe they will recoup some money there.

I'm looking forward to watching it, hot mess or no.

I honestly had no idea that there was a movie for it till I saw the preview last week when I went to see Deadpool. I play the video games, but the movie does not look interesting.

I guess it might be a good mindless movie (and I don't say that pejoratively - sometimes we just need to shut down our brains) to sink into.
That's what I assumed from the trailer. But I'm also expecting it to kinda suck. I loved the first two games, so I had hopes until I saw who they cast (love Blanchet, but not in this role at all). Can't really stand that short comedian who's in everything Kevin something I think.
