Movies

Showed the kids this classic tonight. Love gritty New York of the 1970s.

CAN YOU DIG IT?

Watched Dune Part Two last night, which was a near-perfect film until the final act (just rushed so much narratively). Also watched Transformers One, which was very silly and fun.
Exactly how I feel about it.
Do I wish the assault on the Emperor's base were 15 minutes longer? Yes. But did it bother me? Not particularly. I think it was similarly brief in the novel.

Up to that point I think the pacing worked pretty well for me.

I am very in the tank for these movies, though, so I respect the dissenting opinions. :p

I still gave it 4/5 stars, it just really fell off a cliff for a film that had otherwise barely erred to that point.

I'm glad it wasn't terribly long. You kinda know the outcome, even if you hadn't read the books. The knock on the Marvel movies is by the end you're kinda exhausted, and mostly know the characters are going to win the final battle scene. Then the villain says "Ooh, I see you came to play today" and then it goes on for another 20 minutes.

With that said, Dune 2 ruled.

I've never read the books and don't like the Lynch adaptation.

Dune Pt 1 is in my top 5 for the decade in part because of it's willingness to be an action film with a slower, meticulous, dreamy pace.

So the fact that the 2nd film speeds the plotting up so much in its second half was especially jarring.

Still really liked the film. But I definitely prefer Part 1 and wish Part II had been bold enough to slow things down. It feels like they were worried about the # of people who found Pt 1 slow and boring.

Yeah, I gave it a 4.5 on Letterbox but could also see myself knocking it down to a 4 upon rewatch.

The pacing essentially reflects that of the novel, but I understand your complaint in a vacuum.

Now's the best time of year to sub to Letterboxd if you enjoy the platform.

I've used the Pro level for several years which is a great value for $15 a year. No ads, set your streaming services for alerts when watchlist items become available, beefed up stat dives, etc. This year I'm upgrading to Patron for a mere $39. Already having fun toying with the customizable posters and backdrops.

Promo pricing is automatic on web, but if you sub via the mobile app there is a discount code for each tier here:
