A few of these I wouldn't consider particularly depressing, but if we're goin Christmas adjacent, I will add:

Eileen

Eyes Wide Shut

The Apartment

Little Women

Does Gremlins count? The story about Phoebe Cates dad is pretty rough.

Also, might I recommend Whit Stilman’s Metropolitan?

It fits well with The Holdovers and Dead Poet’s Society.

Also, is Dead Poet’s Society Christmas-y? I don’t recall much in that regard in the movie but it’s been a minute since I’ve seen it.

Explicitly, no. But the film was shot around the holidays so it always feels Christmas-y.

My thoughtful wife bought me a year subscription to the Criterion Channel. So now I have to prepare my Criterion Closet monologue.
Two years ago a friend gave me the same and I didn’t use it much because of some life stuff and I’ve been wanting to re-sub again. My only gripe is most things are only in stereo

Also if I ever had a closet video I would just supermarket sweep that shit. Just slide everything off the shelves into bags

Yeah, I stopped paying attention around then too and just kept it on in the background while I cleaned the house. The Rock's same old shtick is getting tired. Chris Evans had a funny line or two, and I love Simmons and Shipka, but neither were on screen enough to save it.
I'm hoping (a little) that The Smashing Machine with Benny Safdie will make him want to try and act more instead of just playing The Rock in slob after slob.

I guess I should have waited a couple nights to watch this. It's probably a shitty movie, but I'm stoned so it's funny.

Seeking a movie rec that’s on basically any streaming service but Prime or Netflix. No real guidance other than I just want something enjoyable. Maybe no horror because it’s just not my genre but willing to give anything a chance.
