Movies

There's a choice clip from the La Vaginoplastia song which has been making the rounds on social media (derogatory). It looks quite bad and is definitely going to win Best Picture.

Most people I know seem to hate Emilia Perez, except this one massive cinephile in my life who has genuinely interesting taste and thinks its kinda good.

Also apparently James Cameron loves it and has seen it three times. lol
Cameron and plenty of others have been vocally fawning over it for months, it's very strange.

I can see how it would appeal to rich out of touch liberals in that it makes them feel good about Mexican or trans issues, and that voting for it would somehow be a "take that President Cheeto" to the new administration. I can also see how it would appeal to ambitious and bizarro filmmakers and cinephiles because it's very weird and takes huge swings.

The problem is that the representation is actually bad and harmful, and none of the big swings land and come across as hilarious. I've heard the camp argument too, but I'd think camp would have to be fun? It's a very strange case.

I do think it does have a decent chance at best picture, but so do The Brutalist and Conclave. We've been due for a stinker BP after a couple good years, so we'll see.

It's just funny that almost every year there's at least 1 movie that the industry tries to gaslight me into thinking it's good (Joker, Trial of Chicago 7, Don't Look Up, Triangle of Sadness). It's NOT going to work for this one tho lol

I haven’t seen it yet but it’s been pretty much only negative word of mouth I’ve seen.

James Cameron also thinks his 4K AI restorations of The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss and True Lies looks great so what does he know lol

Bahaha, I had a blast with Triangle of Sadness!

without seeing any of the top films of the year yet but knowing how the academy votes tends to vote; The Brutalist has to be the runaway favorite for best picture.
It's certainly possible.

Here's a breakdown as a big Oscar nerd.

The standard these days is usually a movie HAS to win screenplay OR director if it wants to win BP.

The far and away favorite for director is Corbet for Brutalist, I think that's close to locked.

Conclave is a pretty far ahead favorite for adapted screenplay after winning the Globe. This is where EP would be nominated. EP could pull off an upset, but with how many noms Conclave also got at BAFTAs this morn, I think that has a solid chance. Original screenplay is between Brutalist and Anora.

So the thing is, the last movie to win best picture without winning screenplay or director? Chicago. A musical that also won best supporting actress (for which Zoe Saldana is the favorite). Granted this was a much less divisive film, but still.

So who knows, we may see a first of it's kind in a while. The top three are definitely Brutalist, Emilia Perez and Conclave.

Burying the lede, Criterion...:

CHUNGKING EXPRESS IS BACK!

Now do I wait for the WKW 4k set or just grab this....

That would be worse than Coda and Green Book winning BP, combined.

The good news is that all of its support comes from Europe and the Oscar's have ranked choice voting-- and there are plenty of people who loathe the film.
The movie has been critically pulvarized in Mexico, especially since Jacques Audiard admitted he didn't really research the country for it, and none of the actresses are Mexican. It finally releases wide there next week, and I expect the hate with balloon further.

I have no issues with directors from different backgrounds than the material taking on a project. See Killers of the Flower Moon being a top 3-5 film of the decade for me.

Emila Perez has a song about about the trans character "smelling like daddy". Anyone on hormone blockers would cease to smell like a man.

And regardless, it's a cheesy, emotionally manipulative film full of caricatures.

I can't remember the last time I loathed a film this much.

I haven't seen the movie in ages, but I decided to splurge on the new box set version of "The Conversation".

I have a love for these 70's crime thrillers and need to get more movies in this genre.

Anyway - the box set also came with a cassette of the score....but I'll probably also be getting the recent RSD vinyl release as I'm probably keeping this cassette sealed.

It's a very jazz centered score, so right in the wheelhouse of many users here...

One of my favorite movies, def one of my favorite scores; I'd love to have that on vinyl.
