Movies

(I am not part of those dozens)

Saw The Brutalist. Loved the first part. The 2nd part…uh WTF? It felt a bit like two different movies. Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce winning Oscars is fine by me.

Anora is next on the list.
The 2nd half is definitely more oblique than the first half leads you to believe. You think it's going to be some American Dream story, but it's a more obfuscated look at how trauma and violence inform art and culture. The ending is definitely tongue and cheek. Don't think a lot of it is meant to be taken literally.

I'll admit it's a very complicated movie and some of the context may be lost on me due to my own lack of film education. I think the movie stands for many different things. Technically, it's an incredible movie. It is beautifully shot. I loved the use of Vistavision. The cinematography is superb. I think the 2nd act just felt weirdly disjointed and maybe that's on purpose and speaks to the art and what you said. I'll admit I am not the most adept at understanding what a filmmaker is going for with their work. It's why I'm thrilled my wife got me the Criterion Channel subscription because I enjoy challenging movies, especially as I get older. I would love to watch this again and see how the 2nd act feels with a repeat viewing. It definitely sticks with you and that's a great thing for a film to do in the day of so much disposable filmmaking and recycled ideas.
