Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

This is effortlessly on brand for 2020

The second round of small business funding has now been tapped out as of this morning.

Unless Congress and the Senate approve more money. There is none left for businesses that need help.

Not sure what's happening in America (I'm guessing it's the same situation) but here in the UK the vast majority of Universities are on the brink of collapse. It's really bad.
I thought universities there were strictly limited by the government as to how much they can charge domestic students per year, regardless of what costs the universities have. What could have possibly gone wrong?

What went wrong is that there are now no foreign students and so the universities incomes has been decimated. If this were 20 years ago when there weren't any fees and tuition was paid for by the government then they wouldn't be about to go bust. As a friend said to me "the difficulty is most universities are leveraged up to the wazoo. Encouraged and forced to become markets, they'll now be fucked by the markets."

If the government doesn't step in and bail them out then we'll probably see up to three quarters of the universities in the country go bust within the next 6 months. For many the timeline for bankruptcy is much shorter and are imminently in danger.

We are so screwed. This picture was taken in Florida over the weekend after businesses were allowed to reopen. Miami suburbs.

Florida has no mandatory wear a mask order because that would be 'going too far' and violating people's rights, but they strongly encourage you wear one and practice social distancing when you go out.

Taking a look at this photo, not a single mask can be found. And that certainly does not look like people are practicing social distancing.

I fear you give people a little freedom and they will return to normal will be the common trend we see across this country.

Ohio Governor Says He Reversed Face Mask Order Because It Went 'Too Far'

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — An order for people to wear face coverings while in stores was reversed last week because it “went too far,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Sunday.

DeWine reversed the order Tuesday, saying many Ohioans saw it as “one government mandate too far” and saying face coverings were strongly recommended but would no longer be required. He repeated that sentiment Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” calling it “a bridge too far” and saying, “People were not going to accept the government telling them what to do.”

Conversation with my father last night. Am I the asshole? Extended an olive branch by agreeing with his prison policy even though I'm torn on it (I don't believe there is enough support outside of prison to just mass release anyone right now but also don't think prisons are safe either).

Definitely not the asshole. Hes making a bad faith argument. "It's just a joke" is bullshit that he tried to retreat to when he was wrong. People just hate when they share dumb shit and anyone dares to not just laugh or agree or let it go unchallenged.

And yeah, trying to co-opt Calvin and Hobbes into this makes it that much worse!

My father just texted me about how the CDC has adjusted down the number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths.

Coronavirus deaths in the US now stand at 11,300 people. A reduction of 5,700 people. Those 5,700 people are now classified as flu-like deaths.

He went on about how flu deaths are being attributed to COVID-19 to inflate the death rate and if you add the two numbers together, the numbers are still within the usual flu deaths per season.

Like WTF.

Where did his info even come from, I don't see it reported anywhere. In the news today was deaths are much higher than previously anticipated.

The only news I saw about deaths yesterday, without looking for any, was a headline about Trump saying the total will probably be about 100k. Not sure what your Dad is smoking.

Did you see this one about GA?

We're just begging for a second wave.

I don't see any elderly people in that line. Younger folks feel more invincible, and with this virus, they may be (yes, there are exceptions for those with underlying conditions). Herd immunity is an option as well.

Spoken like a totalitarian. We have freedoms in this country. Hopefully people exercise those freedoms in a responsible manner.
I went out briefly on Saturday afternoon to pick up some curbside takeout and told my wife that what I saw may have spooked me more than anything else to date. People everywhere. Swarming the bewery on the corner's takeout window: no masks. A random food truck in an empty lot with a dozen people in line: no masks. Full-on soccer game happening at the community park with a crowd of spectators: no masks. Walkers, joggers, cyclists, groups of kids, backyard parties, groups of adults having a drink around fires in their yards...people everywhere: nary a mask to be found. If that was any indication, it doesn't matter that Indianapolis has technically extended its stay at home order longer than the state's. Social distancing is over. Done.
I suspect you aren't seeing this involve elderly people or people with underlying medical conditions - the people most vulnerable to this virus. Also, are you certain that the takeout you ordered wasn't prepared or transported by someone who has the virus? Why aren't you acting in a safe manner? Why are you hiring someone to bring you food who may have just delivered to someone else who may have the virus? Don't you think this puts the delivery person at risk? Why are you being so irresponsible???

Anyway, these anecdotal incidences are a tiny fraction of the population. Most people are making better (IMO) decisions for themselves.

Just fwiw, a lot of photos like this, especially some on beaches, are being taken with long lenses and make it impossible to tell how far apart people are. They would look completely different from a bird's eye view. Just something to take into consideration, take them with a grain of salt.

In this photo, it's pretty safe to say they are not 6 feet apart.

My father sent me some pictures this morning. He is out and about with no face mask and apparently no one in public is wearing them.

That is in Western Massachusetts. Which tends to be rural and lean red.

My father is saying for the simple fact that the governor mandated wearing masks people are defying the order. Him included. According to him it's an overreach of the government and the government doesn't have the power to tell people what to do.

My father said also, you will only find people wearing a mask in liberal communities. For example, North Hampton which is full of (not going to repeat the term) people. North Hampton is a very friendly LGBTQ community.

I have more family out that way and they can confirm that most white males are not wearing masks what so ever. Even refusing to put one on to enter the grocery store.

I disagree that you can say that with certainty at a glance. That's all I'm saying. This is a pretty good overview:

This is an excerpt, but there are other good ones in there:

No, I totally get it.

I'm just looking at the angle of the photo I shared, a side view. I'm also looking comparing the width of say the window and menu to the space between people.

Yes, in a lot of vases the angle and distance makes it appear people are much closer together than they really are.

The only dimension you can be confident of is left to right. Without being able to trust the forward/back, it is impossible to be certain of their actual distance.

I'm not saying I think everyone is being responsible and social distancing, but I don't really trust any photos that aren't from overhead because it is very hard to tell. Especially when it is a long lens.
