Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

Conversation with my father last night. Am I the asshole? Extended an olive branch by agreeing with his prison policy even though I'm torn on it (I don't believe there is enough support outside of prison to just mass release anyone right now but also don't think prisons are safe either).

Also, I would have probably replied "You are sensitive about Democrats aren't you?" After his last message. Does that make me the asshole? 😄

The real shame here is corrupting the purity of Bill Watterson’s work for a joke that doesn’t even make sense.

Well, that and being a dick to your own son just to be able to feel something.
I mean poor Calvin has been subjugated to pissing on Ford logos for now a longer time than strip ever even ran. It’s the same with the alt-right co-opting Pepe The Frog from a really funny comic Boy’s Club. #ChevyForever #LikeARock

My kid just introduced me to the idea of the "match test" for masks. We had ordered some online, and tested them out by putting them on and trying to blow out a lit match.

It's interesting how many ads I'm getting on FB and IG for "lightweight, breathable" masks. I get the appeal -- I run hot -- but this might be a case where that's a bug, not a feature?
Yes and no. Go back to the pants analogy. The pathogen is being released into the air suspended in droplets of liquid from your body. Those droplets get stopped by any mask and thus the pathogen stops too.

Bill Gates says the US system produces 'bogus' testing numbers.

Currently the US is testing 200,000 people a day.

Many of these tests are repeated tests, where asymptomatic people are being tested everyday for COVID-19. For example, that delivery guy delivering packages to affluent neighborhoods, he healthcare workers on the front line and politicians. Tests also favor affluent well connected people who can skip the lines to get tested.

Low income people, essential workers and most of the middle class does not have that same access to tests. We are not testing them anywhere in the numbers we need to be to determine the levels of infections in our society. We really are only testing them when they show up at the hospitals with symptoms.

To make matters worse, a large number of those 200,000 a day tests take 3 days to get test results back. Bill Gates believes all those tests should be thrown out, because the person could be spreading the virus for 3 days before getting tests results back. That doesn't help us in the fight.

There is no well thought out testing plan and equal access to testing like in other countries.
I haven’t been tested. Most of my peers haven’t been tested. Only a few of my staff members have been tested because they were exposed (or there was the one that was tired of having to play fifty questions because of his allergies in screening every morning). Only one of them was retested (and that’s because his test was lost). Our patients have a strict guideline which requires waiting several days for a new test after a negative is resulted.

I think he might be flying with some false assumptions. I’ve also stated that my fear in mass testing here is people will assume they are immune from a negative result and then get sick.

Our kids' preschool is going to try to set it up so we can get tested there if we want to. $55 for antibody test and $100 for PCR swab tests. Are the antibody tests reliable? I thought I read they weren't very accurate.

Most antibody tests need validation still, but it depends on what they are used for. Many have a high rate of false positives right now, which is not good for many reasons. I'm sure there is/will eventually be a good one though.

EDIT:

Some math:

Say an antibody test has a 5% false positive and a 5% false negative rate.

Say the real previous infection rate in a given population is 10%.

If you do completely random testing with the above test and you test 1000 people, you get:

In reality 100 people have been previously infected in those 1000, but you obtain a very different number with a test that has 5% false positives and 5% false negatives.

False negatives - you miss 5 cases that are really positive and obtain 95 positives. The people you miss is not a big deal, because they think they never had it so they remain cautious.

False positives - there are 900 real negatives in the 1000 tested, so 5% false positives mean you actually detect an extra 45 people that you should not have. This is bad because those people will think they are immune when they are not.

The total number of positives would be 140 with such a test. If 45 of those are wrong, on average, how do you know which ones?

Anyway, the false positive rate needs to be way down for the test to be really useful for random population testing.

I haven’t kept up with this thread but feel free to RSR me. Isn’t it a bit of a crazy coincidence that the company in charge of remdesivir is named Gilead (as in handmaids tale, Gilead) and that the last link on their website is for the modern slavery act.

Disclaimer, no tin foil hats over here.... I still get vaccines and wear a face mask.... just a crazy coincidence.

Not sure what's happening in America (I'm guessing it's the same situation) but here in the UK the vast majority of Universities are on the brink of collapse. It's really bad.

I have heard a couple Universities are cashed strapped here, but I think overall at least for now most are holding on.

Situation here is critical.

Here in the United States I believe the private universities have a much higher profit margin.

Also, around the board, universities haven't issued any kind of refunds. They still have their full tuition for the spring semester. They did transition over to online learning. Which wasn't an expensive move as most universities already had online classes programs in place.

There are however, class action lawsuits being filed by students right now demanding a refund. They claim they paid to take classes in the classroom. Not online. So, we will have to see what happens with those lawsuits.

An emergency proclamation issued Thursday in Stillwater, Oklahoma, requiring the use of face masks in stores and restaurants was amended Friday after threats of violence.

"In the short time beginning on May 1, 2020, that face coverings have been required for entry into stores/restaurants, store employees have been threatened with physical violence and showered with verbal abuse," Stillwater City Manager Norman McNickle said in a statement.
"In addition, there has been one threat of violence using a firearm. This has occurred in three short hours and in the face of clear medical evidence that face coverings helps contain the spread of Covid-19."
Due to the threats of violence the city has decided to amend their emergency order but still want people to wear face masks whenever possible, the statement said.
