Yea but they don’t typically use social distancing with the flu. The real comparison would be deaths of both during social distancing.

most local businesses are following mayoral guidelines and recommendations from the medical community, not the governors- and San Antonio has extended the Stay Home, Work Safe orders until May 19th in response.

when the mayor was asked directly about how Abbott specified that cities could be fined and state orders superseded all others, the mayor just said, "we'll continue to put out guidance and data in a transparent manner, and the governor can decide if he wants to override..."

Ah yes, this is why every flu season New York has to store bodies in freezer trucks and resort to mass graves.
 
Three scientific articles on hypertension drugs and the risks related to COVID-19 were published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

There was a bit of a panic several weeks ago because it was thought that people on these medications were more at risk, since SARS-CoV-2 uses ACE2 to enter cells, and ACE2 is in the same pathway that is targeted by hypertension medications. I posted some info about this in this thread several weeks ago.

I take one of these, so this is particularly relevant to me.

Good news - there is no negative effect at all. In fact, one of the studies may even suggest a protective effect.




From the third article:

In our analyses, use of either ACE inhibitors or statins was associated with better survival among patients with Covid-19. However, these associations should be considered with extreme caution. Because our study was not a randomized, controlled trial, we cannot exclude the possibility of confounding. In addition, we examined relationships between many variables and in-hospital death, and no primary hypothesis was prespecified; these factors increased the probability of chance associations being found. Therefore, a cause-and-effect relationship between drug therapy and survival should not be inferred. These data also offer no information concerning the potential effect of initiation of ACE inhibitor or statin therapy in patients with Covid-19 who do not have an appropriate indication for these medications. Randomized clinical trials evaluating the role of ACE inhibitors and statins will be necessary before any conclusion can be reached regarding a potential benefit of these agents in patients with Covid-19.

Wisconsin State Supreme Court will be hearing a case Tuesday brought on by GOP led state legislators.

The lawsuit is against the "Safer At Home" order, which they feel the governor does not have the power to extend to May 26 now that the federal guidelines have been allowed to expire.

Bill Gates says the US system produces 'bogus' testing numbers.

Currently the US is testing 200,000 people a day.

Many of these tests are repeated tests, where asymptomatic people are being tested everyday for COVID-19. For example, that delivery guy delivering packages to affluent neighborhoods, he healthcare workers on the front line and politicians. Tests also favor affluent well connected people who can skip the lines to get tested.

Low income people, essential workers and most of the middle class does not have that same access to tests. We are not testing them anywhere in the numbers we need to be to determine the levels of infections in our society. We really are only testing them when they show up at the hospitals with symptoms.

To make matters worse, a large number of those 200,000 a day tests take 3 days to get test results back. Bill Gates believes all those tests should be thrown out, because the person could be spreading the virus for 3 days before getting tests results back. That doesn't help us in the fight.

There is no well thought out testing plan and equal access to testing like in other countries.

I saw his interview. It's disheartening.

If you get tested here, there's a reason - symptoms, contact, etc. - if you do, you have to confine yourself until you get the results and possibly longer depending on the situation.

Even the prime minister didn't get a test when his wife tested positive (he never developed symptoms).

That said, now that deconfinement is starting, random population testing will start prior to it next week. The delay in getting the results will be an issue here. I hope they have a quick turn-around time.
 
Conversation with my father last night. Am I the asshole? Extended an olive branch by agreeing with his prison policy even though I'm torn on it (I don't believe there is enough support outside of prison to just mass release anyone right now but also don't think prisons are safe either).
