Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

That being said, a lot of the masks I saw on Amazon when looking for a reusable washable one the other day had active charcoal valves / filters.

They seem to be very popular with people ordering masks.
I genuinely think the majority of the public does not understand the point of masking. I seriously just keep a bandanna in my car, because that’s all you really need. Something to stop anything you may spew in the air from infecting others.

I will have to disagree. I’m not a baby boomer. However, the term “boomer” is definitely tied to those generalizations and is used in a derogatory manner. Thus the word itself is derogatory. The word “colored” isn’t in itself derogatory, but if I used it to describe someone of other than a white ethnicity, you would all (and rightfully) lambast me for the racial epithet.

I personally hate the evolution of the term and it’s use because it is another tool society has used to create divisions among us.

This is an outrageous comparison. One is used to mock attitudes of the class of people that still control everything in our society and one is used to other-ize a large population of vulnerable groups. There is a difference between punching up and punching down.

To me, it’s not. Both are meant to demean other people just because they are different from you. The fact that the analogy is “outrageous” should tell you something about it. Because it is a fair comparison, one just carries more baggage.

It's not a fair comparison because you're making a false equivalence. Comparing a racist term with mocking the most protected class in our society is a bad comparison and ignores the magnitude of potential harm they could respectively cause.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. Mocking or demeaning an entire group of people for any reason to me is not okay. I see this as a big part of how we got to the current state of the world. We’ve worked very hard to divide everyone.

If we really wanna split hairs (which I don’t really because the whole thing started with someone essentially trolling but oh well) I believe the derisive term or phase was “Ok boomer” it his hard to judge intent on a message board but I took it as literal shorthand, for baby boomer. If she had typed mother and son solely by themselves would that have been generalizing mothers? ( also, is it ever okay to generalize? Legitimately asking because personally I find some generalizations are sometimes both helpful and humorous but I am also a straight white dude and it is easy for me to overlook my privilege) and would that be okay? I think the whole comment was making light of the constant stream of misinformation that is passed on by specific groups of people that don’t understand technology enough and as such, are regularly duped into believing and then echoing the misinformation, I am sure you could pull numbers to back up this assertion but again the initial statement was made in jest, and the “offended” party was not really offended by the statement as much as they were the likely perceived hypocrisy of it all. Just my two cents.

My response was to the assertion that “boomer” was not derogatory. I’ve seen it used time and time again as short hand for OK Boomer, not merely Boomer. My response was, no it is derogatory and this is why. I then made an analogy to show why. Your basic response was it’s a bad analogy because one is worse. My argument is they are the same action. We have decided that one group is okay to make fun of and one isn’t. The outcome is decidedly different, yes; but it doesn’t excuse the actual behavior.

Temple Coffee's CEO Stepped down.

3 weeks ago he sent an email to employees stating that they could not wear face masks. Face masks violate the company's dress code policies. After local outrage and bad press he has made the decision to step down.

This is in Washington State FYI, so not a Red State / Anti Mask area.

You must have a hard time with comedians if you don't think any groups are ok to make fun of. Punching up is one of the fundamental building blocks of stand up. There is an enormous difference between punching up and punching down and I think arguing that they are the same thing is not really a unifying gesture. Telling poor people or marginalized people not to joke in a negative manner about rich and privileged people does not further equality.

I wasn't trolling. I view this board as a place where, for the most part, people can discuss thoughts and ideas without insulting each other, even when their opinions differ. I'm not a Baby Boomer, but I don't like the dismissive way in which the derogatory use of the word 'Boomer' has become fashionable.

I never said I was offended. I wrote:
Perhaps moderators could refrain from using what has become a slur used to demean and mock older people.
I just think it's possible to discuss a topic without resorting to name-calling. As soon as one starts name-calling, they've got nothing of actual substance to add... which is why people start name-calling.

Most comedians are honest about their biases. Understanding is important. The problem with your punching down and up system is that the goal line will eventually shift and then the same behaviors you are excusing now become deplorable. Either the act is deplorable or not. And the act I am specifically talking about is using a derogatory term. I have not made any statements about humor. I’m also not defending @High Rant District .

My apologies if I mischaracterized your intent, I guess my assumption was that you were a bit of a “pot-stirrer”; which I am completely fine with, and as such you were picking this out of her comment as a way to stir the pot. My bad.
