Adding to this post as I go along today.
Love Hallucination from Jessy Lanza is very enjoyable, somewhere between
and
right now. She definitely has been listening to a fair helping of Music From Memory releases, as the backing synthesizers on most of the songs here are very emblematic of that label's sound. I'm hearing some Garrett (Dam Funk) influence here, notably on songs like "Big Pink Rose." However, a few of the album tracks are somewhat filler ("I Hate Myself" feeling the most empty, and closing cut "Double Time" is kind of unsatisfying). I might come around on those with future listens.
Aphex Twin continuing to be Aphex Twin. I love that Richard is focusing on the drum progressions here, not just the several forms he can twist a breakbeat (though he more than excels there and is unparalleled in IDM). In addition to this latest EP, I'm elated to hear that more is on the way.
ODD EYE CIRCLE are back!!!!
Among the better K-Pop girl groups I've listened to, and now back after a six year hiatus with label disputes. This new EP
Version Up is another bite-sized, well-produced set of guilty pleasure jams.
Carly Rae Jepsen's
The Loveliest Time is her best since
E•MO•TION: Side B. It doesn't start off strong with "Anything to Be With You" and its fairly repetitive, obnoxious chorus. The following track "Kamikaze" is a needed turnaround, with killer 80s era synthwave production. "After Last Night" has drum production that had me immediately thinking of modern era Aphex Twin breakbeats. In no time flat, you'll be treated to the godtier stretch of lead single "Shy Boy" to "Put it to Rest" with the latter track being one of my favorite tracks she's ever made, I kid you not. One complaint I have at the end is that "Stadium Love" and "Weekend Love" should have been switched in the tracklisting. First
release of the week, one I totally didn't expect. Well done, CRJ.
