New Music Friday!

Out of respect for Alan Sparhawk over the loss of his wife, Mimi Parker, I listened to his new album, White Roses, My God in its entirety. I'm sure Sparhawk's stylistic choices/decisions on this album were made in lieu of dealing with his terrible loss.. That being said, this was and will be the only time I will ever listen to this album.. RIP Mimi.

Yeah, I didn't really have expectations but that was nevertheless not what I was expecting.

For a Trace Mountains taste test, check out his track "Cary's Dreams." It's the first track I ever heard of his, and it hooked me immediately. Since then I've followed his work, and seen him live when he comes through Philly.

Merce Lemon is new to me this year, and I haven't yet dug into her previous work from 2017-2020. That said, a single from this album "Will You Do Me A Kindness" caught my ear, and then I've continued listening to other singles from this upcoming album, and really enjoying them.

Figured I'd give guidance on my top two listens at least …
Trace Mountains is actually pretty good 👍Reminds of TWOD, at least the more uptempo songs. It has that Heartland sound to it. Thanks for the rec!

Merce Lemon’s “Will You Do Me A Kindness” is one of my favorite songs of the year. Disappointingly I am pretty sure she left the track off her new album for some reason. I plan on still giving it a listen but I was pretty bummed that amazing tune was omitted from the album proper.

Not on my Radar List but definitely on my listening list for today:

Birdmask's  Isolde EP and Horace Andy & Jah Wobble's Timeless Roots

Neither appeared on any of the lists I pull my info from, but both are highly interesting to me.

The Birdmask EP has mostly been released already as singles and is a great companion piece to the Tristan EP that came out last year — the art for all the singles and both EPs are definitely thematically linked.

Horace Andy is always worth listening to. One of my favourite voices in reggae. The few singles I've already heard from this have been tasteful covers a revisitstion of one of Horace's hits. I'm sure the whole thing will be a joy.

So far, Ezra Collective is great, Roger Eno & Soul Asylum are fine and Alan Sparhawk is... something. 😶

September. Mixed bag all over. A top10 contender among them.

🔥
  • Floating Points - Cascade [electronic slammer. Sam Shepherd back in his bag. I'd be terribly remiss if I didn't have this in my DJ arsenal]
  • Lia Kohl - Normal Sounds [W for Moon Glyph. Very, VERY big W. These everyday sounds incorporated into an experimental/electroacoustic record are meditative and introspective]
  • Nala Sinephro - Endlessness [best jazz-related release from this year. "Continuum 4" to "Continuum 7" is among the most special runs of tracks I've heard in a while. She's done it again]
👍
  • Dead Sound - Into the Void [not MFM's best effort all around, but some pleasant ambient pop soundscapes nonetheless. Marco Sterk of Gaussian Curve being involved was a primary draw. Still gonna be an eventual LP purchase in time for being a DJ and for the MFM library, of course]
  • Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal (mixtape) [very talented, clearly. Could you imagine if there were more performances with the effort found on "Nissan Ultima" throughout? Holy shit, it could be next level. I'm certainly more invested in her now. Hope she got a bag for featuring on Katy Perry's career revival attempt 💀]
  • Jon Hopkins - RITUAL
  • Jamie XX - In Waves [a few bangers on here, and a couple other OK tracks, but does not approach the variety nor quality of In Colour from nearly a decade ago. Enjoyable enough]
  • Xiu Xiu - 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips [accessible Xiu Xiu does not mean bad Xiu Xiu. In fact, it is enjoyable! Jamie's vocals and charisma here are the best since Girl With Basket of Fruit, my favorite record of theirs. The psychedelic influences fit well and don't wander; the abrupt and cataclysmic percussion is still very present here]
🤷‍♂️
  • The Alchemist - The Genuine Articulate [ugh...I was hoping that Alc would always be at the "👍" tier at a minimum, but this is the first time in recent memory that he has failed to meet that standard. He should refrain from rapping]
  • Lady Gaga - Harlequin [I was hoping this would not be a Glee-fest, but alas]
  • Nubya Garcia - Odyssey [more jazz that falls flat to my ears]
  • Sarah Kinsley - Escaper [a grower. I might feel differently on this by year's end. "Last Time We Never Meet Again" is a wonderful opener]
👎
  • London Grammar - The Greatest Love [I was not expecting a shift to alt-pop. Disappointing]
  • Snotty Nose Rez Kids - Red Future [mostly annoying to listen to]
🤮
  • Katy Perry - 143 [omg Katy! You did it! You made your comeback with (totally not washed) producer Dr. Luke! It really is a woman's 🚺 world 🌎 and we're lucky 🍀 2 b livin' in it 🔥🔥🔥 Magdalena Bay and Charli better watch their backs for pop AotY]
  • Alan Sparhawk - White Roses, My God [I love your music you have created with your late wife, and forever thank you for it existing. But truthfully Alan, this 1 gec offering ain't it]
  • The Voidz - Like All Before You [the hell is this? These musical ideas are grossly blended, with horrible sounding vocoder over Casablancas's vocals. This is like a undercooked Cindy Lee]
