New Music Friday!

I will get to it. Eventually. I just learned there was a new Rogê album out today and that would have gotten listened to before all the ones in that other post and why you all worried about @Rip_City ’s enjoyment but me… me you’re like eat your fucking cold ass moldy beats and like it punk!?
You not enjoying FJM makes much less sense to me than @Rip_City not enjoying FJM. The Venn diagrams of RIYL artists encompass more of your circle than his.

I doubt you will come around on this one either but who knows.

My thing is more that despite our best efforts we only have a finite period of time on this planet and we will never be able to listen to or enjoy it all.

If you know there is next to no possibility that would enjoy something and you have the option to instead to use that time to experience something that are much more likely to enjoy, then you are doing yourself a disservice by wasting time with something you will not enjoy.

The Wicked analogous to the new FJM album works better if the author was addressing the Wicked sequel. You already have experienced FJM’s music. You gave it a shot and it’s not your bag. This isn’t a project that you think you might not like this a a project you have tried and know it’s not your bag. Why actively seek out more of it?

I understand taste evolves and sometimes it’s good to revisit things you haven’t enjoyed in the past as it’s possible that it might click now where it hasn’t previously but for me personally I don’t chase that sort of thing, they would need to come to me naturally without effort. Perhaps you hear a FJM track randomly on Spotify or in a commercial or movie that piques your interest and then you go check out his latest album but until a moment like that arrives and forces your hand, I choose not to waste my time.

There’s also a reference point thing. Given the reception, this album is gonna take up a considerable portion of the music geek talking for a moment, so while it is not my bag (which has as much to do with his fans as it does his music, a casual listen is fine, enjoyable even, FJM fans can be as insufferable - not you TLK - as those Radiohead and Pink Floyd fans), it is important to have knowledge of it to understand what everyone is going on about.

On paper you’re right, I should like him. I don’t, so I listen despite thinking I will never get it.

I mean I didn’t like Phish until I did.
Sure, I didn’t like Brightblack Morning Light until I did either but I wasn’t after realizing it wasn’t my thing. I wasn’t seeking out each album they released until one clicked for me. Instead, I heard a BML song randomly and thought that was kinda interesting, then I went and checked it out and it turned out my taste had evolved and now Brightblack Morning Light is awesome.

This is gonna be a hot take and probably a bit hypocritical on my part but maybe you don’t have to engage in a conversation about FJM if you know it’s not your bag?

I can get that. There’s also a level thing here right? I mean I want to watch Cobra Kai and Dune pt 2 and the Dune show but when the rest of the family goes to bed, I’m more likely 99 times of a hundred to go put a record on. I love exploring music and actively listen to things to push my understanding and boundaries. I still buy shit sometimes cause the cover is cool. I get some enjoyment out of even things I don’t like or I wouldn’t spend as much time seeking it out. It’s why I do the generator thread and make it a point to listen to things every day that I didn’t personally curate.

I tend not to for the most part. I listen and keep fairly quiet about it these days. I haven’t felt the need to engage since I saw him. Every once in a while I mention him when I come across him in a setting I don’t expect like sandwiched in between Nickel Creek and Kacey Musgraves.

Also, not for nothing, enough people - like yourself - that I respect the opinion of dig him that it makes me curious to continue trying, but unlike a Captain Beefheart or Ornette Coleman record, I have no interest in owning a copy to drag out every once in a while to see if I get it.

This has been my exact mantra this year 💯

On to other things, I love the new Kendrick a lot. One thing that irks me, is still the thing that irked me this summer… like you killed Drake (and personally I don’t think he was worth the effort - but I do like the creative burst it stimulated - so I guess I need to swallow the pill a bit) so to continue beating that dead horse is gonna probably hold it back from a best of the year nod from me. I have a feeling that when all the dust settles, this ends up like Mr Morale and an album of the moment as opposed to Butterfly and Damn being all timers. I mostly feel that way because I imagine I won’t dig all the beef references three months from now much less years from now.

I don’t know, I think this has been an interesting conversation into our motivations. It be interesting to hear from @avecigrec as to what motivates him to listen to as much new shit as he does.

I hope I never stop loving exploring and discovering. I’ve listened to this Jane Weaver album from the generator thread four times now.

I mean, @TenderLovingKiller® makes an excellent "hot take" point. Country is NOT my cup of tea, and I know that and have known that most of my life. Therefore, I don't waste my time listening to country music and I don't care to get involved in country music-related discussion.

That being said, if there's an album that the entire N&G world is raving about and it's one of a country persuasion, I'll likely see what all the hubbub is about. Being as it's country, I'll likely get a few tracks in and realize it's still not for me, shut it off, and go on about my day. But there's a rare occasion (e.g. Jason Isbell) where I find something that clicks with me and it winds up on my AOTY list.

TL;DR: I'm motivated to check out what I like and I don't waste my time with what I don't like. Pretty simple. And I'll peep something getting a lot of hubbub just to be sure.
