New Music Friday!

Have you not listen to the šŸ†• Jack White album?! Because it's one of the best rock records of the year! I'd go as far as saying it's even better than some White Stripes albums šŸ¤·
I own a copy on blue wax and have not yet listened to a single second of it. I purchased it on a whim from my local. I havenā€™t cared for much of Whiteā€™s solo stuff but everyone keeps saying itā€™s White Stripes level album.

Itā€™s a bit of a ā€œSchrƶdinger albumā€ as long as I donā€™t listen to it the longer I have to not be disappointed when it doesnā€™t meet the lofty expectations.

Iā€™ve gotten through the first four songs in FJM. Donā€™t hate the title track. she Cleans Up might be one of the worst sounding tracks I have ever heard. Everything about it, especially the dumb ass rapping is distracting. Josh Tillman and the Accidental Dose is okayā€¦. But one of the things I actually like about him is his voice and the lazy vocal (which given the lyrics is probably intentional) is off putting. Mental Health is pretty good.

My take was it was alright.

So rest of albumā€¦
Screamland & Summerā€™s Gone were good.
Being You hurt the flow of the album and just sounded lackadaisical.

I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All is a legitimately great fucking song.

ā€¦ā€¦

Iā€™d rank it after one listen with Honeybear and Godā€™s Favorite Customer as his best work, but still not enough there to draw me back much.

Same.

And as for my placement, right now I'd go:

1. Comedy
2. Honeybear
3. Fear
4. Customer
5. Mahash
6. Chloe

Iā€™d go

1. Honeybear
2. PC
3. Fear Fun
4. Customer
5. Chloe

Fear fun and customer are pretty interchangeable in their rankings. Iā€™m not sure where to place this as of yet, probably in the mix with 3/4/5 if not solidly in The 3 spot

Yeah, Comedy would be near the bottom for me, still great but a bit more dour on humanity in a way that I have to be in the mood for. Better in small chunksā€¦.

Fuck it, hereā€™s mine.

1 I Love You, Honeybear
2 Godā€™s Favorite Customer
3 Fear Fun
4 Mahashmashana
5 Pure Comedy
6 Chlƶe and the Next 20th Century

That "dour on humanity" is exactly why Comedy is my favourite Flubby Jake Mushrooms album šŸ˜‰

This, but I'd probably flip 2&3. But as you and @Fleetwood-Matt said, they are interchangeable. 'Pure Comedy', I can listen to side A pretty much anytime, but the rest I need to be in the mood for.

November listening. Done with new listening for the year. I didn't actually get to the Father John Misty record and, like @TenderLovingKillerĀ® suggested, will not listen to it to further perturb others.
Came across many that I enjoyed to finish 2024 strong. Still only gonna have a top25 tho.

šŸ”„
  • The Cosmic Tones Research Trio - All is Sound (EP) [oh hey another Mississippi Records W. Surprise surprise]
  • Defeated Sanity - Chronicles of Lunacy [top-tier drumming from a top-tier death metal release. Does everything right]
  • Haley Heynderickx - Seed of a Seed [she had the impossible task of following up perfect debut I Need to Start a Garden six years removed, but she pulled it off...for the most part. The highs soar sky high. Just one song not quite as memorable and could have gone without ("Spit in the Sink"). It is still fantastic and a worthy candidate for ~35min of your listening time. She's a charming live act; go see her if she stops by your town. Portland bias has her in this tier for me anyway JUST SO YOU KNOW]
  • Kendrick Lamar - GNX [he's baaaaaaccckkk. Much better and easier to digest than Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Hits you in the mouth right out of the gate. Reminiscent of his young boastful self yet with maturity attained over one decade later]
šŸ‘
  • Boldy James, Harry Fraud - The Bricktionary
  • The Cure - Songs of a Lost World
  • Opeth - The Last Will and Testament [this record is like an IPA in alcohol terms; an acquired taste. You either like it or not at all. Thankfully, a second listen opened it up for me, and this one has a slew of "holy shit, they're back" moments. It's still not in the top half of their discography for but with a catalogue as strong as Opeth's, that is a commendable mark. Best since Watershed for me]
šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
  • Amber Mark - Loosies (EP) [VERY SAD. I love her but some of these are so undercooked]
šŸ‘Ž
  • Primal Scream - Come Ahead [wow! Really bland. About what I expected from a group of their age and one that hadn't put out a record since '16]
šŸ¤®

None.

Second Opinion: Caribou - Honey šŸ‘āž”ļøšŸ‘Ž [after perusing at the Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread! around two weeks ago, I ended up staring at a wall for close to an hour, questioning my life decisions. For the week after, food lacked flavor, activities outside of music were dull, and my days were void of meaning]
