It be interesting to hear from @avecigrec as to what motivates him to listen to as much new shit as he does.
I am left-handed. It’s basically the same thing.ADHD and probable autism.
My thing is more that despite our best efforts we only have a finite period of time on this planet and we will never be able to listen to or enjoy it all.
If you know there is next to no possibility that would enjoy something and you have the option to instead to use that time to experience something that are much more likely to enjoy, then you are doing yourself a disservice by wasting time with something you will not enjoy.
The Wicked analogous to the new FJM album works better if the author was addressing the Wicked sequel. You already have experienced FJM’s music. You gave it a shot and it’s not your bag. This isn’t a project that you think you might not like this a a project you have tried and know it’s not your bag. Why actively seek out more of it?
I understand taste evolves and sometimes it’s good to revisit things you haven’t enjoyed in the past as it’s possible that it might click now where it hasn’t previously but for me personally I don’t chase that sort of thing, they would need to come to me naturally without effort. Perhaps you hear a FJM track randomly on Spotify or in a commercial or movie that piques your interest and then you go check out his latest album but until a moment like that arrives and forces your hand, I choose not to waste my time.
This isn’t really my point. What I am trying to express is if I have never tried pizza with pineapple, I am not gonna assume it’s bad, I am gonna check it out and see if it’s something I would enjoy but once I have tried it and determined it’s not my thing, I am not going to keep ordering pineapple pizza just to see if my taste has changed. I am going to spend more time ordering pizza I enjoy. If I am out somewhere and someone offers me a slice of pineapple pizza I might give it a try but it’s not something I am gonna go out of my way to eat.Sometimes it takes awhile for things to click for me. Often when it does, that album becomes an all-time favorite or pushes my taste forward.
Example include White Blood Cells (on CD), Stankonia (on CD), Deafhaven (by proxy of my old roommate), Art Angels, the band Can.
Artists that I didn't like who later put out an album I loved include Sharon Von Etton, Tyler the Creator, Danny Brown, Fiona Apple, Haim, St Vincent... many of those are now among my favorite artists now.
Other bands have never clicked despite repeated attempts and / or live shows at festivals ala Tame Impala and Beach House. The reason I gave them multiple attempts is that they seemingly should be in my wheel house. So revisiting their albums is a little different than giving a new album a shot. But at the same time, several VMP releases shifted my opinion on an album. For example, the Death Cab release.
In sum, I enjoy pushing the boundaries of my taste and I think it's part of why my pallet is so varried at this point. That said, you're still not gonna get me to listen to a country album that wasn't released by Kacey Musgraves.
