New ultrasonic vinyl cleaner in the works: Humminguru

I’m back in business now with a near gearbox installed. Little quirks, maybe, I feel like the sound of the rotation is a little different now and on my second plug in it didn’t fire on immediately.

I’ll say, replacing the gearbox itself was super easy. However, getting the right sized tool to get the damn cover off was the biggest pain in this process.

Was there a trick to do if the wheels wouldn’t spin the record? Wheel 2 is spinning and both doesn’t look worn (would be surprised if they were).
only one wheel spins. if the record doesn't spin at all, it likely means that the record is a tiny bit small.

I’m hoping it’s that. It’s the Django Reinhardt from Sam Records I tried to clean. There hasn’t been an issue with other records so I’m wondering if Fred’s new pressing plant collab makes them a smidge smaller than normal haha

does the record have a flat edge? if so, it's definitely that. i have some from smashed plastic and they don't spin in the HG. i just permanently added the padding to one of the rollers and haven't had any issues with some records not spinning since.

also let me know how that django is...ive been really tempted by it. same with the big bill broonzy...i know that one is sold out but have a lead on them for MSRP.

It’s flat but not like Optimal pressings. But it is smooth along the edge. The next record is spinning fine so it must have just been the Django size/edge but I might add that little sticker afterwards, just in case.

Will do. I thought you had it?

I'm curious: Has anyone here switched from the industrial DIY ultrasonic cleaners found on eBay to the Humminguru? Do you have any field reports?

I have the Humminguru, but I am still interested in the big bin cleaners with heaters, etc.

Okay now I'm curious, heaters? Do some of them have heaters? And if so, why?

Most of the 6 liter ultrasonic baths on eBay have heaters which enhances the cleaning action. Also, according to vinyl cleaning agents like TergiKleen state that the optimal temperature to clean records is ~35 degrees celsius.

Anybody clean old styrene 45's in the 'guru? I've read elsewhere not to do so but I'm wondering if a single 2 1/2 minute wash cycle would do any harm.

The reason I find that kinda odd is that the ultrasonic emitters actually raise the temperature of the water when they operate. The Degritter actually shuts down once it reaches 35 C and goes into cool down mode. Perhaps different frequencies cause less heating but I would think if those cleaners were actually properly ultrasonically cleaning they wouldn't need a heater at all. It takes about two 12 minute cycles to raise the temp from 22 to 35 C with the Degritter.

Warmer water is actually helping clean. Kind of like washing dishes.
The heater feature is nice to get the temp up to 35C before you drop in the vinyl.
You could just use the transducers instead but it's adding unnecessary wear.
I actually drop in at 35 and run a cycle up to 40C and it's fine. Usually about 20 mins.
Did 10 records at once last night. Super convenient.

Hey if it works it works I guess... It probably has something to do with the amount of water in the basin too, the Degritter has a pretty small reservoir whereas some of these larger machines seem to have 5 or 6 times the amount of water in them, I could see where a heater may help in those instances.

Yeah I think mine is 6L.

Nailed it.

Yeah I just checked. 6 liters is big, Degritter is 1.4 litres, so yeah it would take FAR longer to heat up naturally at that size.
