Being the man of many contradictions I am, "Stick That Fucking Flag Up Your Goddam Ass, You Sonofabitch," simultaneously expresses my disgust at the whole enterprise while also inspiring me to do what little I can with what's given to me. From the first time I heard it I always loved this bit, despite being "dumb enough to vote" because I certainly don't believe 'em:
But wait a minute “dad”, did you actually say freedom? Well, if you’re dumb enough to vote, you’re fucking dumb enough to believe them. Because if this country is so goddamned free, then I can burn your fucking flag wherever I damn well please... and then I'm gonna stick it up your ass!!!

I’m sure it was only used once but it feels like they played this song every time Kevin and Winnie had a serious talk at the end of every episode. Wish I had Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight,” that’s a classic scene

The Staple Singers - The Staple Swingers

I’ve never seen a full episode of either this or the reboot so idk how much Kevin or any of the other characters are into soul music. I’d hope at least a little bit, given how much great music of that genre was being made then.

Kevin probably would have had to borrow this from his sister Karen.

7:00 PM ⑤ NBC Must See TV - Friends, how many of us have them??
AND
8:00 PM ⑤ NBC Must See TV - Seinfeld, talking loud and saying nothing...

PXL_20221110_122042412.jpg

The National - Alligator - ok kids let's take a trip back to the mid 2000's!!! Napster was dead but it's spirit lived on!! Blogs were like the wild wild west and one of my oldest friends and I were in sync as far as music went! Every day we'd either be sharing posts about music, sharing bands to check out or just sharing mp3's...Blogs straight up would post leaked albums for download or at least links to download, it was crazy and all we seemed to do was consume anything and everything but not much was sticking because just when you started one thing something else would pop up! I remember a day when something finally cut through, said friend sent 2 songs, one called "The Rat" (it took much longer for me to really get into the Walkmen, I wish at the time it hit me like it did a few years later) and "Abel" by a band called The National.... That song hit me in some way I can't explain!! It actually got me back into buying physical media and going to shows, they were coming to town, we went and that's where I bought the record. The whole record floored me, I became obsessed with it and played the hell out of it for months...it still gives me chills when I listen to it today and that's all thanks to my man Mohammed who linked it up all those years ago!
AND
The Beastie Boys "The Mix-up" - for a band that's known for talking a lot, mostly saying nothing but sometimes having a point they really aren't saying NOTHING on this record!!! I'm guessing if they were still around today Seinfeld might be an old enough show for them to reference now...

7:00 PM ⑤ NBC Must See TV - Friends

Play an album introduced to you by a friend (bonus points if they’re a NYC based Band).

KISS "Rock And Roll Over" (1976 Casablanca; 2014 reissue)
I've mentioned this story before, but KISS was one of my cousins favorites. He played them all the time when I visited back in the 70's. I didn't pay them much mind but they were fun. So that was my first introduction to them. Flash-forward to when my daughter was 6 years old. She really got into the newer Scooby-Doo movies and her favorite was the one featuring the members of KISS. She started seeking them out, asking me to play them in the car. I had to explain that they were an actual band of real people and not just rock & roll superhero cartoons. The first time I showed her a video of them performing "I Was Made For Loving You", because yes that was the song (long live Kisco!), she said "but they're just guys in make-up!". Anyway, I got her a copy of Dynasty and that led me to seeking out more, like this one, which is pretty much my favorite of theirs at this point. Also, New York band.

Yada-Yada-Yada, Play an album about nothing or any other Seinfeld reference (bonus points if they’re a NYC based Band).

Television "Marquee Moon" (1977 Elektra; 2012 reissue)
This band needed to come up at some point, given the overall theme of the monthly challenge. With respect to Seinfeld, other than it's a New York band named Television, I'm going to highlight the song "Friction", which is a word that could be used on the episode "The Contest" without mentioning the actual theme of the episode itself - as was done on the show. It's basically something you don't want if you wish to remain "master of your domain".

My best friend growing up, Brian Mackinson always had excellent taste in music. He would almost always get to bands before me. I remember this album in particular because the opening track, “Skunk” kicks off with a screeched yowl that immediately grabbed me.

Japandroid - Post-Nothing

NBC’s Must See TV Thursdays really dominated for a good portion of my life growing up in the mid 90s you had Friends and Seinfeld and whatever terrible sitcoms the network was trying to launch in between (Veronica’s Closet, The Single Guy, Suddenly Susan, etc…) with E.R. capping off the evening. I can’t say I was ever a huge fan of Friends, though I did watch it fairly regularly. It’s was funny enough and everything about the show was easy and comfortable. Me and my crew were much more into Seinfeld. That show was perfect in its off kilter sense of humor and endlessly quotable punchlines hidden behind the veneer of your standard three camera situation comedy. Japandroid’s Post-Nothing isn’t necessarily about “Nothing” so much as it is about seizing the moment and enjoying life to its fullest but it has “Nothing” in the title so I decided to go with it.

One of many artists my friend MC turned me onto upon meeting him at work many years ago. Happy to still be able to chat about music, and less work now that we're both retired :)

I certainly knew the name Grace Jones for a very long time, but it took my good buddy realizing I was pretty unfamiliar and lending me a handful of her records to really put me on track. He also happened to nab this copy from a bargain bin for me shortly thereafter!

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

Jerry's apt was famously located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, not far from Columbia University where Vampire Weekend was formed. And while I love VW, a lot of their lyrics are nonsensical to almost being about nothing.
