Political Discussion

As has been discussed on this page, I find this very hard to believe. There is absolutely nothing Trump could do or say that will make his sycophant cult turn on him and he knows this. Either they will find ways to bend over backwards to justify his criminal behavior and normalize his incoherent and nightmarish ramblings or they will just feign ignorance and pretend he never said or did it. Plus for a fairly large percentage of his base the offensive remarks and blatant lawlessness are what they like about him, so difficult to imagine they would suddenly be outraged now.

He's managed to pull the wool over the eyes of a lot of people in this country and it's fucking terrifying. It's honestly ridiculous that the rest of us have to sit around and pretend like this ghoul is in any way, shape or form a normal presidential candidate. I'm tired of being made to feel like I'm overreacting for being outraged, for being scared, for having functioning eyes and ears that are able to see and hear plain as day the things this guy spews out of his mouth.

And unfortunately, as someone who resides deep in Trump territory, I'm increasingly worried that the optimism that I see on here is going to turn out very similar to the 2016 election. The naivete in me would so deeply like to believe we are better than that, but if America willingly signs up for four more years of this shitshow, then it will sadly confirm my fears that he is an accurate representation of a not insignificant portion of this country and that makes me very sad to think about.
Trump is undoubtedly a representation of many in this country, how many, we'll see. But what he and the right has done is normalize that mind set, if the President of America condones violence, being a bully, the mentality that "someone else is taking what's mine", racism and all the other bullshit, well damn, that means I'm ok, I'm on the right side. He gave the fringe the green light to be their true inner selves without accountability. Trump is leading the biggest circle jerk in this countries history............now we wait to see how many there truly are in that group.

I still hold out hope that those making the most noise are actually the minority.

One of the republican talking heads says there is a story being shopped to news outlets that would end Trump’s campaign (I don’t think this is it). Sorry I can’t remember these people’s names, but he said he didn’t pursue it because he didn’t see any credible confirmation.
I think this is who you are referring to. He says he won’t publish because it hasn’t been vetted. In this vid clip, he also says there’s a Harris story that is prob more likely true, but wouldn’t be as damaging to her campaign.

Hmm, I'm curious, but this is paid walled for me. Says I need to pay $7 for access.
My wapo sub expired 4 days ago. They’ve been trying to get me to re-sub for weeks. I paid $30 last year and the best they were offering this week was $3 every 4 weeks. They just offered me $29 for a year, so I did it.

If you pm me your zip, I can send you your stats.

This is what they are offering me.

Thanks @Nee Lewman, the gift link worked, after I went through the hoops of trying to remember the "hide my email" email address I created an account with last time.

No surprise to me that this area is a sea of blue:

This is fucking weird and gross.
Ick. Is the Trump campaign just noise now? Get a headline any way possible?

This donor map gives me hope that Florida is actually in play

The issue is that we know the most politically involved people tend to vote Dem anyways so I don’t know how much of an indicator it truly is as lots of low information voters usually turn out for the Presidental election.

I was happy that my small hometown in Central IL that is very MAGA friendly hued blue even. Even If they barely donated much at all.

This is interesting, you can type in your zip code and see how many individual donations and for how much that your neighbors have donated to each candidate…

I have a hunch I know how my next door neighbor leans. This is the guy who yells at his dog, got in a huge verbal 'f you' fight with another neighbor about something trivial, (complete with homophobic slurs) hangs laundry over a shared fence, and leaves his dog chained up outside when he passes out, leaving the poor girl yelping at him, in all weather. So two days ago he hung this, and I was anything but surprised. Sorry about the pic quality, the dude's a lunatic so I took this from afar.

I haven't seen a single convincing bit of data or analysis that looks good for Harris heading into the final stretch. From an electrical college position I think she's toast. She either made bad decisions on her own or listened to bad advice on issues such as how to address the Arab-American issue and the genocide in Gaza, and it looks like a lot of those voters will stay home. She's been great in other areas, but not good enough on some big issues that voters to her left have with her. They keep hoping for the moderate conservative to help them win and that's a losing strategy and has been for some time. If she loses, and I'd bet money on it as of today, then it will be more so because of people not being able to bring themselves to vote for her then because of voters switching to Trump.

Even the most diehard Dem train Kool aid drinking political scientists I know have said in the last couple weeks that this is the first time they've been convinced that Trump will win. Other than cognitive dissonance and gut feelings, there just isn't a case to be made for her winning based on the measurables.

The donation data looks the same as the last few elections. Dems win the small dollar donations with ActBlue. It looks like a blue map, but it doesn't translate to the voter maps where disengaged low information voters who don't donate flock to the shittiest candidates.

I've been trying to not think too hard about the consequences of a second Trump win, but I'm thinking we should all start to ponder it a bit more. Being a professor who teaches the stuff they claim the Dems represent, in a Southern state, at a university that is run by the most obedient bureaucrats you ever did meet, has me feeling a little more like I need to have some small preparations in case shit gets bad fast and vulnerable folks need help.

I'm not looking to argue with anyone who doesn't trust the data or just believes things will work out. I of course hope you're right even as the science I practice does not have a place for hope. But the point of even posting this is that I do wish that you all will consider volunteering to help vulnerable folks in your communities. Be willing to stand up for, and hide if need be, trans folks and undocumented migrants. Help women who need abortions. This will stand regardless of who wins since the assault won't stop, but even more so if the fascists win. It's going to be worse than last time. And if they win, by then it'll be too late to plan how to resist without it adding risk to yourself and those you want to protect. So take some time and think about what you would need to do in the worst case scenario. Be prepared. Don't get caught by surprise and give into fear or anxiety. Don't acquiesce to their control. Rely on each other. Read anti fascist texts. Remember to love.
