Political Discussion

I’m not sure I’ve ever been to Mississippi, if I have it certainly made no impression on me.
My grandparents used to live near Meridian, they used to take me to Biloxi as a kid, that was alright but that is about it. Mississippi is very old south money in places like Oxford but most of the state is insanely poor. Alabama is usually 49th in most everything and Mississippi is 50th.

Sounds like South Carolina. I bet it is as swampy too.

You live in Georgia right? Alabama might as well be another planet. Ran by Governor Meemaw. I went to school at UA but other than the major cities there, people are just different.
Yeah, I've been here for five years. Was in Iowa for a year and Knoxville for the six years before that. Georgia is the most polarized state I've lived in, but thanks to that it's not as bad as Iowa or Tennessee were politically.

I was in Colorado off and on for 15 years before that so I felt spoiled for a while.

The fact that different states can have that much control over federal elections is also mind numbingly stupid to me. How folks in Alabama haven't had their own revolution is crazy.

Cause Alabama is the worst. Seriously while I hate the weather in Florida, Alabama and Arkansas are the only places I’ve ever been that I have no desire to return to.

Mississippi would like a word as well.

Liberals will dump on the deep south and then wonder why they have no interest in their party.

These places are like this because they're among the most impoverished and exploited.

North Carolina’s politics are kind of fucked up but I love it here. The people are pretty decent (for the most part) and it sure is pretty. Feel the same about Virginia. The rest of the South seems pretty awful in my experience. The big cities always seem to be the exception.

It's funny how they also think the Deep South is somehow more racist than elsewhere in this country.
I would say, in my experience, the racism is more overt. Systemic racism is everywhere and racist assholes live everywhere. They seem more brazen down this way. (And honestly, it’s all other.)

I agree that it can be more overt here, but I heard white people in Michigan and Colorado say way more racist shit in front of other white people than I've ever experienced in the South. I live in a town with a KKK memorial store in our downtown, so it's definitely here though. But it's there too.

That's like Canadians thinking Quebec or the prairies are the more racist spots in Canada, but it's pretty much the whole country, just more overt in those spots.

my rankings have more to do with natural beauty and livability than anything. Ariana’s offers very little in either category. The fact that it’s in the Deep South has very little bearing on my opinions.

With all states, they have blips of beauty but overall not enough to overcome the livability issues.

West Virginia, Kentucky are similar on the livability scale for me but they have a ton of natural beauty in portions of the particularly Appalachia (that are also some of the poorest).
