Political Discussion

I don't know why I'm like this but every now and then I read the twitter updates of one of our former forum's former members, who is this week literally -- and I must stress that I am not paraphrasing here -- wishing for fascism -- again, NOT putting words in his mouth -- to catch on in America so that one "moral order" can be "imposed on society."

Anyway, just remember the next time we get into an argument with each other over moderates vs. progressives that we used to joke around on here with a serious actual nazi.
No idea who you're talking about, but glad that nazi punk fucked off.

And this is where we are at.

I haven't heard an update, but it was estimated that 1/3 of Americans were unable to pay their rent the first week of April.

All landlords expect their money. Even the ones who are working with their their renters expect all the past due rent as soon as they are working again.

I don't know about you, but if I suddenly had 3 months of rent due I wouldn't be able to afford it.

There seem to be more trial balloons going up about Biden potentially selecting Warren as a running mate. While I personally think that’s a risky play given her position in the Senate, I’m also thrilled at the prospect of Warren getting that opportunity (hoping it is worth more in her hands than John Nance Garner famously described it). I wonder @DownIsTheNewUp & @others if that choice would appease some of that desire for progressive recognition we’ve discussed? Would that make it any easier to support a Biden candidacy more enthusiastically, or has this ‘traitorous snake’ thing already poisoned the well?

In the one progressive area that I frequent (Intercepter Listeners group on FB) there is a lot of anti-Biden sentiments. There are daily posts complaining that anyone suggesting they vote for him is “vote shaming” them. There is still a lot of blaming the DNC and the media for the whole thing. I don’t think a lot of them have come to terms with the fact that Bernie just didn’t get a majority of the votes. It’s hard to tell how much of his base continue to take this view from one message board, but I believe it is evidence that there is a portion of it that would have only supported Sanders. Nothing will convince them. These types are talking about either not voting, starting another party, or voting Green.

I have gotten into it with a few. And what I have noticed is that these people take such a black and white view of the situation, have a tendency to make assumptions about others to fit their narratives, and devolve to name calling. Aka “Bernie bros”. They have a hard time interacting Respectfully with people that disagree with them.

I’m voting for Biden either way. Because Trump is that dangerous. But his picking of Liz would be bitter sweet.

On the one hand, it would show Biden might actually bend a bit to progressive ideas. On the other hand, it would confirm what most Bernie supporters already believe... that Liz not dropping out b4 Super Tuesday was part of a back room deal with Biden, and that she sold out the progressive movement to further her career once it was clear she wouldn’t win.

Everyone, and I mean everyone needs to stop doing this. People need to understand that it's going to take a few Presidents to right this ship......regardless of what you deem right. We all need to understand that and honestly, Bidden / Warren, regardless of how you think it came to be, is probably the most "across the board" stable we can hope for. Biden definitely has his flaws, but seems a little more open minded, flexible, willing to talk, and with Warren next to him tossing in her 2 cents, it might be a good thing.

What I know is, what we currently have scares the crap out of me..........4 years is a long time to just ride it out.

Are the numbers really in the results to show that she skimmed off enough votes to spoil Bernie? I didn’t see that.

She cost Bernie several key states on Super Tuesday. And the narrative post-ST would have been very different if he had won Mass, Minnesota and Maine. (I might be missing one too).

That, of course, presumes that Warren supporters would have voted Sanders with her endorsement. By that point Warren had poisoned that well via her accusation and constant emphasis on Bernie Bros so that may not be the case.

But I’d argue that’s at least partially on her too. I watched numerous people who voted Sanders in 2016 and who were open to him initially, slowly sour on him. And it was almost always framed through things they were herring Warren say.

According to a poll NBC did and was on Meet The Press this morning, 32% of Americans believe Trump has not gone far enough with his actions against stopping the spread of COVID-19. 36% of Americans believe he has gone too far.

That means more Americans think we are overreacting than under reacting at this time.

Are they contradicting themselves over at NBC?

What does the other 32% believe?

That is if all those voters would have gone to Sanders. Some could have and some couldn’t.

I mean I’m okay with that. 64% of Americans aren’t waving Confederate flags in Michigan.

As a lifelong NYer it is SO bizarre to see the complete 180 in public sentiment toward Cuomo this past month or so. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve it right now—he has been handling a lot of things very well as of late, but the guy was extremely disliked prior to COVID. It’s just strange.

I guess you find out who the real leaders are in times of crisis. He’s passed with flying colors in my opinion. I don’t know whether he’s a good governor or not since I don’t live in New York but I’ve been impressed with his leadership and realness. He’s a straight shooter without being an asshole.
