Political Discussion

Did we ever discuss the HOA President of some HOA Gated Community in Texas falsely imprisoning a black delivery driver?

The delivery driver was delivering appliances to a resident in a gated community. He was driving a box truck.

After making his delivery he was blocked in by the gate by the HOA president who blocked the gate with his own vehicle. The HOA president confronted the delivery driver and identified himself as the HOA President and told him he had no business being in this neighborhood.

The HOA president demanded to know how he got the gate access code and who gave it to him. The delivery truck driver responded by saying he could not provide that information. It would go against his companies privacy policy and that he was protecting the privacy of his customer.

The HOA president then threatened to call the cops if he did not disclose who his customer was. The truck driver held strong and the HOA president called the cops. The truck driver was recording the whole incident and was in tears.

The HOA President did call the police. And reported an African American was up to no good / looks suspicious and has no business being inside the gated community.

The police never did show up. The delivery driver was detained / blocked in by the HOA President for 4 hours. He was only let go after he saw his customer talking with the him.

The delivery truck driver once released, called the police himself to let them know what happened and was scared that just leaving would make him guilty of fleeing the scene.

The HOA President never did respond to press inquires. The gated community access code has reportedly been changed after the incident.

Yep, I saw that. Nothing came of it? That poor man was SO SCARED. He was simply trying to do his job. The poise he had to draw upon within himself to just survive that situation. It broke my heart for him.

Outside of the obvious ugliness of these situations, the mental stress we are putting on black people is not ok. I tried to imagine how I would feel being detained for 3 hours and just couldn't think of anything other than me yelling and cussing a ton and then me having a heart attack. And then, after he leaves, he calls the police to tell them he is leaving and not running away? He didn't do a damn thing wrong - he should not have had to do that.

We are living in scary times. Someone just summed it up well on another forum.

If people choose to simply dismiss information/fact/data as "fake news" because it doesn't align with their political / world views there is no hope. They will not compromise in any argument, won't learn or have any improvement on values. There can be no resolution if people simply refuse to accept information that does not align with their views.

With America become more divided, and one side in particular not willing to make any compromises things can only get worse for the time being.
It will get better. Many have lost faith in institutions, we used to burn people at the stake for saying the earth was not the center of the universe. There will be a course correction at some point, I don’t know if the pandemic is that point (I know currently it doesn’t feel like it) but something will happen.

I hope you are right and I hope it is in our lifetimes. Not very optimistic at the moment though.

Layoffs continue to substantially outpace people returning to work as states begin to reopen.

Many companies are adjusting forecasts for sales to be down for at least the rest of the year. As these calculations are being made adjustments are being made to staffing levels.

Just heard from one person this morning, where they said they were laid off along with 20% of their companies staff. They thought they were doing quite well. None of their clients closed, business was only down 10% of the last couple months. But they laid off 20% of staff to maintain their growth and profit margins because that's what the responsible thing is to do for their shareholders. Staff is the only controllable they can adjust. Property and bills they can not.

So many idiots that don't understand what censorship or freedom of speech means or what rights businesses have.

Twitters stock took a pretty big hit today. Down almost 20% at one pint in time today.

Conservatives are vowing to boycott Twitter, investors are scared.

Edit: Also fact checks (which provide the true information based on data) are apparently "political"

Twitter will be fine, no one will boycott it, Trump can’t even stay off it, most of his comments bad mouthing Twitter were made ON Twitter. He would never put forth the steps required to learn a new social media platform he has a hard enough time with Twitter. I think social media should be regulated more than it has been in the past (not regulating it was a conservative talking point until recently, free speech is protected however they won’t be able to regulate that. Trump’s re-election chances are not currently looking great he sees this, his only hope is ginning up his base via this culture war BS, he says this shit to get a ride out rational people. The best thing we can all do is not take the bait.

This why if you vote for Trump or don't vote against him (even though Biden is an old white guy idiot who will continue to promote capitalistic driven class, race, and gender inequity) you are at minimum tacitly furthering racially motivated inequity, and at maximum promoting if not actively participating in white supremacist ideals.
This is the problem with the radical wings of American politics. The whole "there are no shades of gray, you're either with us or against us" mentality. If I don't vote for Biden I'm a racist? What a narrow view.

Sounds more like a parrot to me.

My dad is similar, thought not quite as outwardly extreme, but it started with Obama and instead of us arguing over texts it just ruined our relationship and makes me not want to see him as much and sometimes regret it when I do.
Not to get too deep into it but my dad is ex-military and used to be ultra conservative but being an alcoholic and having a brain aneurysm has changed his mental makeup quite a bit over the past decade or so, he still hates Obama but I think he may actually hate Trump more ( it’s a coin flip really).

That's cool, but as long as my dad keeps listening to conservative radio all day long, I don't see it ever changing.

I honestly don't care about his political views. The only part that ruined our relationship is that he can't not talk about it. He is just so angry and worked up about it all the time, even though none of it affects him, he can't help but rant about it when we're together. I don't mind spending time with him otherwise, but I dread that happening every time, so I don't want to deal with it.
