Political Discussion

This happened five blocks or so from my home:

I was out of town Saturday so I don’t know what the area was like. But the more I read about this, the more livid I get. The protestors are widely reported as armed, when there’s no confirmation of that fact. The police cannot confirm whether the murderer has been arrested, and are clearly bullying witnesses into handing over any evidence that supports where all signs are pointing: this guy had police and hate group ties, and they’re trying to sweep it under the rug.

So, russia started its invasion of ukraine tonigh sending in "peace forces" to the donbas.
I read an interesting commentary in a german blog yesterday arguing that the west is underestimating russias long term strategy. It´s from a couple of days ago but it detailed the likelihood of a full occupation of ukraine. It says that putin is trying to built his legacy in russian history by bringing back a great russian empire by incorporating ukraine and possibly georgia, forcefully and extending ties with belarus, Kazhakstan and armenia, whose goverments are pretty close to russia.
We´ll see how far this goes but it is not looking good, especially considering China will watch this very well given it´s own plans to bring Taiwan back into the peoples republic.

a little bit about the recent background of the crisis, but ukraine and russia have a conflicted history going back a while:

Edit: Another good overviewfrom the guardian:

Sighs

So let me get this straight. Conservatives would love to get rid of anti discrimination law because the law violates people's first amendment constitutional rights to freedom of speech?

Is this just the conservative court making up reasons to push their agenda and rewrite law?

There are so many nutjobs around that the Governor General of Canada had to release an official statement saying that no you can't send "non confidence" votes in to her to depose the government and then put in place the guy that said this was possible. This is related to people that were part of the trucker convoy that paralyzed Ottawa for three weeks, of course.

The NBC Nightly News just had a story about the average rent going up a little over 19% last year.

Though they focused mainly on Florida, especially the Miami Beach area where rent went up by 40% and Los Vegas, NV and Austin TX where rent went up by 30%. And telling the stories of people who say their rent jump by $700 a month all at once when they renewed their lease who have been forced to quit their job without a plan and pick up and move somewhere they can afford to live and start their job hunt.

I can't imagine being in a situation where I had to quit my job and leave my home without any plan but find some place more affordable and then a job simply because I can't afford to stay where I am.

With most cities having already lifting eviction moratorium, NBC reported stories like this are only becoming more common.

Serious question - how close are we to WW3? I am not panicking, and yet definitely have a sense of unease at the very least.
I'd say it depends on what China does at this point. Once these bullies start coordinating, then the rest of the lesser bullies will get uppity and the sanctions will turn into more "peace efforts." then escalation upon escalation.

I mean the fact people already are suspecting nukes to come is making me super paranoid.. I need to get off twitter or at least have something to get my mind off all this

I don't want to go to war or die on a battlefield

As close as we’ve been since the Cuban Misile Crisis. Closer perhaps because I don’t see how we can, with a clear conscience, sit back as Russian conquers Ukraine and then likely peacefully annexes Belarus and looks to do one or the other to Moldova.

At least China seems a) surprised by the speed and scope of invasion and b) willing to at least give lip service to the idea that Ukraine should remain sovereign at the moment.

Sadly I'm to skeptical for this. I think China is a) looking to guage what kind of response an invasion of Taiwan would receive in turn, particularly with the international players distracted by escalation in the Ukrainian conflict and b) will almost certainly be back-door financing Russia, rendering a these sanctions being discussed far more ineffective than the NATO countries seem to think they are going to be.

I'd say WW3 has been underway for at least 10 years. The idea of war as infantry and planes on strategic fronts is antiquated. It's disinfo and info wars now. How much of our total supply of goods is foreign controlled where the electronics sector has increasingly proven to be surveillance? If it comes to actual military arms it's mutually assured destruction. At this point with the likes of Ukraine, Taiwan, and don't forget Hong Kong it's about consolidation of controlled populations.
