Republican senator warns against curbing gun rights in wake of Texas school shooting

From CNN's Ted Barrett

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis warned Democrats against having a “reflexive reaction” in the wake of the Texas school shooting that left 15 people dead, by trying to pass laws that would impinge on Second Amendment rights, saying he is confident in the coming days it will be learned that there were “signs” the 18-year-old shooter was “at risk.”

“It's horrible. And you know what we need to avoid is the reflexive reaction we have to say this could all be solved by not having guns in anyone's hands. We can always talk about reasonable measures, but we also have to talk about better situational awareness. I'm almost certain that in the coming days or weeks, we're going to find out that there were signs that this person was at risk, and we need to have an equal or greater attention on prevention and that's a key part of it,” the North Carolina Republican told CNN.

Asked if there was a component of guns that could be part of the solution for the problem of mass shootings in the country, Tillis said “no.”
“What people immediately want to jump to are red flag laws. Virtually everyone that I've seen here has been one that sweep up law abiding gun owners into what I consider to be an overreach. So the question is can we can we actually get to policy that could make a difference, but not deny people their Second Amendment rights and give them due process? That's what we talk about every time something like this comes up and that hopefully will be the discussion if we have one versus what could potentially be the plot of people going into their political corners, which I've seen every time something tragic event like this has happened and the seven and a half years I've been here.”

That didn't take long. The GOP is quick to say guns aren't the issue. We need to work on better situational awareness...

Listening to 'constitutionalists' on talk radio say that the problem isn't guns, it's Grand Theft Auto and too much internet.
Other countries have both of those, right?

Totally. In fact I think the company behind the GTA series is British from what I remember!

Wonder how much longer Teflon BoJo will be continue to dodge out of this one.

I honestly can't believe he's still employed. We switched over to BBC World news instead of any other 24 hour news stream because they have the best coverage on Ukraine, so I've been getting a healthy dose of your news too. He did it and then he lied about it, oof.
I’m not sure he understands what is actually means. If his concern is people not fairly contributing to the national costs, perhaps start with those who are taking the most and giving the least, i.e. His shit bag donors.

Lets hope at a minimum this causes trouble within the Senate GOP leadership.
I just wish I knew what we were "paying our fair share" for. We have no national health service, almost no social services, no national energy strategy, and we are only now getting around to fixing basic infrastructure that should have been replaced 20 years ago--and that bill barely passed and many pundits believe that it's not enough. Nope, instead we are paying for corporate bail outs--especially the industrial war complex, subsidize the pharmaceutical industry instead of negotiating down prices and giving people rebates instead of companies, and paying to prop up Wall Street with PPP funds that were grossly mis-allocated to multi-million dollar companies that ended up firing workers anyway.

As for the school shooting in Texas, my heart goes out to those parents. They started showing pictures of the kids on the news and I was bawling. I can't really take this sort of news. It depresses me more than anything. These were babies.

Yes it’s beyond belief, but that’s bojo, all he cares about is self preservation, nothing else matters.

All things considered it isn’t quite as beyond belief as everyone brushing the genocide in China under a rug.

My man Beto, confront their asses. Let them own every mass shooting in this country like they deserve too. More of this please, stop playing nice with these guys.

With you. It's a hollow feeling today but at least something can drive some Democrat politicians (O'Rourke and Gallego) to call their Republican colleagues to the carpet on this stuff. I hope there is a lot more of this approach.

Unfortunately the spin will be that he lacked decorum and was trying to grandstand to help his political cause and blah blah blah. I love it though...and think it's necessary.

Oh, and yeah, that's right. Rick Scott was the CEO of a hospital system that committed the largest Medicare fraud to date and was fined more than a billion. He resigned and became a senator. Sounds about right...

governor voldemort, just a total useless human being. refused obama's federal aid to build high speed rail in the state (which, if you've ever driven from tip to taint of Florida, the US's wang, you know it's easily the most geographically annoying drive. Only driving across texas or up California is more annoying IMO) just to turn around and yoke the state with a private company to do it. When Obama offered the money he said "it won't bring in any money or be useful" and then he said the exact opposite when the private company he and his wife invested in was cherry picked to get the contract. he's just, corruption and greed in a suit. Florida's Governor Killed a High-Speed Rail Plan. Now, With a Financial Stake, He Wants to Revive It.

Jesus Fucking Christ...I can't.

some people rather have more guns rather than less victims to the point they will act like these sickos would exhibit good decision making when shooting up a fucking elementary school.

how is this even a logical argument to make?

I’m gonna state the obvious here. Does anyone think that a person that is going into shoot up school thinks they are going to get away with it or cares enough about their own life that this possibility changes their mind. Nope I’m gonna go home. This was a bad idea.

I mean for fuck's sake... are they actually acting like someone who is about to commit the act of shooting up a school is in a state of rational decision making?!? that a fucking sign would make them think clearly?!?

I actually do threat assessments for situations like this and was handling one while news reports were coming out. My district has a 50 page bulletin with protocols, handouts and resources for situations like this guess what one of the questions that pushes it to moderate to high threat. “Do you have access to weapons?” If this kid wouldn’t have had access this wouldn’t have happened.

Seems pretty obvious to me. Take away access to guns and people don’t get shot.

I really don’t understand why people would argue against gun control unless they were living in a war zone.

The argument has always been if you restrict access to guns you only restrict access to law abiding citizens. Criminals will get their hands on guns illegally. Thus you take away the second amendment right to protect yourself with a gun who then can't defend themselves from the criminal with the illegally obtained gun.

The SCOTUS also appears on the verge to overturning any type of gun control that we as a country have been successful in passing. Assault rifle bands and clip capacity limits in blue states as well as conceal and carry laws, expect those to fall this term.
