Political Discussion

Speaking of oil, I'm seeing a lot of campaign ads lately about pushing to make America energy independent. They are all about how we need to produce more oil and vote the conservative candidate who will make this happen and lower energy costs.

Pure ignorance about oil, trade, and OPEC in general.

And also about the imminent probability of turning the planet into a flaming ball of fire.
Someone needs to tell people that we can no longer consume the way we used to. This idea that we can switch 1:1 from fossil fuels to renewables with no disruption is ludicrous.

"Manchin's been taken to the cleaners" - Pat Toomey

Pat Toomey was all over Manchin and the democrats budget bill today.

Toomey says the bill does nothing to combat climate change (a bit focus of the spending of the bill), but rather provide tax credits for wealthy people to by Teslas.

When it comes to healthcare spending in the budget, this is what Toomey had to say.
  • It extends Obamacare subsidies for the wealthy that were supposed to expire
  • Prescription Drug Price Control is going to be very dangerous and prevent new drugs from being created
  • The money for the veterans health / toxic fire pit funding is just a game. The democrats are using a hot button issue now to earmark money in the budget rather than funding this type of care like it's always been done in the past. This is so they $400 billion baked into the budget to go on a spending spree however they please when the budget gets renewed. It should not be part of the budget and a $400 billion spending spree is completely unethical.
Toomey also said enforcing a corporate tax rate of 15% minimum is just wrong, especially when we are heading into a recession if we aren't already in one. It's going to make the economy worse, cost jobs and worse of all, prevent american corporations from investing in America. It will send manufacturing and jobs back overseas. The so called "loophole" that the democrats closed were corporations could invest in themselves within America with their profits as a tax deduction. Now they won't do that.

Lol, I hate Toomey

It was on the local news this evening that the cost of electricity is going up by 50% in MA and a few other neighboring states.

The reason? A large portion of our states electricity comes from Natural Gas power plants and the Russia's war with Ukraine is to blame for the price increase. I'm assuming because of tightening supplies of natural gas.

If only there was a way to cheaply produce extremely clean, safe energy with almost zero carbon footprint capable of rapid scaling of output to meet demands.

Before the 2000's, most of our power was generated by nuclear power plants. However, since then they have been dropping like flies. Being decommissioned left and right as they reach 40 years in age. Very few remain.

The majority of our power generation now comes from liquified natural gas, what we have turned to to replace nuclear power.

Every protest 40 years ago that prevented the building of a new nuclear power plant resulted in over 100,000,000 tons of CO2 emissions. That’s only if you count natural gas electric plants. If the power generation comes from a coal plant add another 240,000,000 tons to that number. Anyone who professes to support renewable energy and moving away from carbon-based energy production and is not full in on nuclear power is either a liar or an idiot.

Or has cottoned onto the fact that there is still absolutely no way to safely deal with nuclear waste?

Is launching it into space not safe? Or just to expensive.

Then again, if the rocket goes boom on takeoff that wouldn't be good...

Yes, what to do with the waste is something that absolutely needs to be solved. They don't even know what to do with it as they decommission power plants. Ultimately, it is left on site indefinitely these days until they figure something out. As as far as I know, that is nothing as of yet.

More on price increase of electricity in MA. The fixed rate is being increased fix rate of electricity from 10¢ to 22¢ per kW.

Note that this is still the summer rate, the Winter rate will see further increases.

This may sound like our bills are more than doubling, but it's only a 50% increase per say because delivery costs are not going up, only supply costs. But for those who use a lot of electricity may see more than a 50% increase in their bill.

The same increases will be happening in several other states as well. Mostly New England.

The fix rate is usually only adjusted twice a year. Winter and summer rate. This is kind of unprecedented for them to adjust it in the middle of summer for an additional time.

Nuclear produces very little waste contrary to the general perception. It isn’t like The Simpsons opening with truckload after truckload of radioactive sludge being hauled out on the daily. That amount of waste can be further reduced by recycling methods that have been around for a while now that also significantly reduces the amount of time that it remains radioactive. The opposition to nuclear energy and storage of the waste is almost entirely political in nature and not due to legitimate scientifically based safety concerns.

So too modify my earlier statement, there is a third category of people who are opposed to nuclear energy. It is likely the majority of the opposed. Those who have been sold and believed the lies of malicious actors and useful idiots. Natural gas industry and petro-state actors don’t fund anti-nuclear and pro wind/solar efforts out of a sense of altruism. Their inefficiency and lack of scalability requires backups to meet demand surges. The number one choice for that is natural gas.
