Political Discussion

Latest polls show Biden has the lowest approval rating of any president in the last 50 years.
  • 25% approval rating when to inflation
  • 30% approval rating when it comes to the economy.
  • Only 38% of democrats say things are going well in our country.

Meanwhile the big banks said today "No signs of a recession". All indicators show that the economy is still strong and investors are still investing. But the working class is hurting like in a recession and it's only getting worse for them.

I'm not a fan of personalities as politicians, but I just want to gauge you'ins thoughts on this:
I recently watched Jon Stewart's Mark Twain award ceremony and more than one speaker mentioned, whether jokingly or not, Stewart for President.

A) Do you think he'd have a chance?
B) Do you think he'd be able to handle the job?

Interesting, voting by mail in ballot is an option again for me this year. For both the primary in September and the general election in November.

Other than in 2020, you either needed to show up at the polls are request an absentee ballot. In 2020 they allowed you to request a mail in ballot because of Covid, and these ballots were counted as standard ballots and not absentee. In 2021 there was no such mail in option.

Just got in the mail today the request form from the city clerk to request both election date ballots as mail in. Same type of notice I got back in 2020.

Any reason why I shouldn't take advantage of the convenience? Pretty sure I don't have to worry about the GOP trying to invalidate / toss mail in ballots in MA but you never know...

I think that it was a cute thought experiment 15 years ago when he was one of our fiercest political commentators and felt like the only guy saying what we were all screaming internally. Today, I'm less thrilled, as his views have definitely shifted towards a "yelling at the bad guys is rude and we need to work with corporations instead of censuring them" sort of aged-rich-guy complacency.

I don't know if this is a new gun control practice or not, but suddenly it's getting a lot of attention by those who oppose gun control saying it violates their second amendment rights.

Basically, if you purchase more than 2 guns at a single time they follow up with you to make sure you still have those guns as "straw purchases" are a big issue right now.

I don't think there is anything wrong with following up on gun purchases such as these. But the main issue is most of the people they are following up on feel this is a violation of their rights, and refuse to show their guns for verification without a search warrant. I feel like it's totally voluntary to comply, and that if you have nothing to hide you should have no issues showing your guns for verification.

What do you all think about this?

This is the argument that the right used in support of the Patriot Act. It's a weak approach to rights protections. The answer is to repeal the second amendment.

So, in other words, this argument works for them as long as it isn't applied towards them. Yup, double standards.

Also, isn't the patriot act worse than asking for you to volunteer the information. Don't they just "listen in" so to speak?

Hypothetical here. So if I buy a gun and go hand it to someone in the parking lot outside who can't legally own a gun, who is liable for any damages caused by the gun?

Like if I so much as walk into a gas station with someone that looks underage they won't even sell me cigarettes or beer. But I'll bet if I walked into a gun show with a shady looking dude they would still sell me as many guns as I wanted...

Here is another Hypothetical

Officer, can we confirm you are still in possession of the guns you recently purchased. Guy with too much money to spare says comeback with warrant, because he doesn't was the ATF to know that his Robot Dog he purchased is now in possession of the assault rifle.

Currently there are no laws against doing such a thing. And that scares me. How long will it be before the first mass shooting by robot dog?

Edit: Reddit took the post down. You know those Boston Dynamic robot dogs? Yeah, some yahoo mounted an assault rifle on the top of one and was recording video of the robot dog running around shooting targets.

These robots are available to the general public to purchase (if you have enough money) that is.

"honest men have nothing to fear from the law" is some serious bullshit is what I think. I think this country needs serious gun reform, but this justification and method is absolutely an encroachment of rights.

Also, isn't the patriot act worse than asking for you to volunteer the information. Don't they just "listen in" so to speak?
The patriot act is (way, way) worse for a variety of reasons, and definitely the lack of transparency and accountability are two of them, but the nature of covert surveillance is that the information is acquired without notification.

Pretty certain this is what happened with Rittenhouse. Can’t recall if the individual who bought him the gun faced any charges.

I don't know about in Rittenhouse case, but as far as I know in cases like this the purchaser can't face any charges. The NRA Lobbyist have pretty much ensured this. I have only ever heard of the purchaser of the gun being liable for damages in civil court.

I was just coming to post this.
