Political Discussion

Netanyahu is just the latest stain in a series of stains since 1948. The state, at its core, has been untenable since its (continuously illegal) founding. It needs to be restructured entirely, not have its image rehabilitated.
I don’t disagree but also you could say the same about all countries that were created as a result of colonialism. Lots of blood spilled over imaginary lines drawn on a map by outside forces hoping to exploit the people and resources of other regions.

In this reality, Israel exists and its existence has caused lots of pain and suffering for the Palestinian people. My point was Israel was cut a lot of slack by the international community prior to their invasion and it feels like they are burning through that good will at a very quick pace. It’s going to make it harder for the international community to turn a blind eye moving forward.

You're right, all of the major world powers have not done nearly enough (some at all at all) to atone for their crimes of history. Israel is an exceptional case of impelialism/coloanialism, I think, because it was recent enough to be documented heavily. There are people in Palestine older than Israel. Imagine if cell phones, internet, and mass communication were around at the time of the trail of tears, and we'd have something close.

And they were cut slack by the major world powers (The US, UK, etc) because they were (and are) the western arm of imperialism in the middle east. They keep the region unstable and uncompetitive. The original British supporters of Zionism were also stoked for an excuse to get all the jews out of Europe, but that's another discussion.

But yes, that good will they originally had is practically gone, and you see it in UN votes trying to support Gaza and Palestine where the US and maybe one or two others are the only nays. People (reasonably) say Trump did a number on US foreign policy, but Biden is not doing it any favors either taking a hardline stance on threatening international courts and everyone else on this issue. Worse is that he doesn't even seem to realize this is a losing battle.

Unless the fascist wave takes over, then they'll just drop the pretense that genocide is bad. And unfortunately there's a good chance that'll happen in our lifetime. The sickness in Western politics is too deep and you can't play centrist politics with fascists because they don't give a shit about the "rules". The centrists are fascists best frenemies and will carry responsibility of this catastrophy too.

The US has 2 right wing parties, so a centrist is just right wing lol

Yep. We should all remember Neville Chamberlain and “peace in our time” when we try to reason with fascists. I equally don’t think you can break democratic norms in trying to defeat them otherwise you start a dangerous spiral on your own side. They really are just a bunch of bastards.

Got off the phone with the Department of Education.

I don't qualify for any of the forgiveness or repayment plans Biden is pushing right now because my student loans are in default.

So that one time adjustment they are doing to wipe out all the interest if you owe more now than you originally borrowed is out of reach for me. There is no way for me to apply for it and no way for me to get my student loans out of default by the deadline.

I'm SOL.

Why don't they make anything for the people who need it most.

I'm glad for the progress, but it's so incremental and the world's so absurd I'm fairly certain my situation will only qualify for forgiveness the day after I issue my final payment.
