Political Discussion

This is my fear.

Even if he does get convicted, I don't see how it is going to change anything. Still will be able to run for President. The people that support him will still support him. The best chance they have to get him is in D.C, but if he wins the presidency again he will probably be able to make all that go away. This dude wants to be a dictator, plain and simple.

Exactly. It's not like he's going to be sentenced to jail. He'll be hit with fines and probation.

And, the other trials aren't going to happen before the election.

I feel like Trump opened Pandora's box in regards to the rule of law that America will never recover from. Even made worse that we have judges at every level bought and paid for these days to say nothing of Congress. Joe Biden may be optimistic about the future of America but I am sure the hell not.

We're long overdue a good Balkanization.

I think it's probably bound to happen at some point whether we want it to or not.
I doubt it. More Californians voted for Trump than did Texans in 2020. Those MAGA folks aren’t just gonna all move to Utah. It would be catastrophic.

I am sure there will be domestic terrorism and whatnot given the vitriol on both sides but most folks will just whine on the internet. The secret ugly truth is the red states need the blue states to function. It’s a big reason why the South lost the civil war to begin with. Politicians like to play chicken with that reality but most understand that is how things work.

I think you will likely see a continuing evolution of the 2-party system. The GOP will continue to devolve. Becoming irrelevant and the Democratic Party will schism into a populist party and a hard left party. It will be less driven by racial divides and more driven by class.

I have a lot to say on this, but will limit it to the fact that there's very little empirical evidence to support a very optimistic take like this on the Democrats. Bernie is hardly even a "hard left" guy and he's the only one still in power in Congress. The Squad have shown definitively that they are only slightly to the left of center. There's no institutional norms or party infrastructure for a left party, even one that splinters from the Dems to take root in America. If anything it'll become a split into a more mainstream conservative of old party and the right leaning centrist party it pretends to be. But even that seems unlikely. Republicans have widespread popular support. While violent civil war might not be a likely outcome, remember that the USSR splintered without a civil war too. Plus if it gets to that point, the only reason the red states need the blue states is because of the dollar and shared economy. Some states on both sides of that would be screwed economically by a breakup and some would thrive. But if the dollar collapses or no longer has a federal government to back it, then it's anyone's guess as to how things would fall. Regional blocks are probably the most feasible solution to that. At least that's what the most optimistic forecasting in current political economy research says.

The whining on the Internet part is probably true for the majority of Americans though.

What I really came here to post was this throwback. Who remembers the loony who posted this about Bannon when the Russian interference came out?

"It brings me no pleasure to report this as someone who's pro life, but I've just spoken to the Marshall of the Supreme Court and they're considering the death penalty for [Trump]."
