I never expected to see Flesner releases on Newbury.

My Rilo Kiley Rankings from listening to entirely too much Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley with the Jenny Lewis Projects interspersed - the gaps are small on most of these and IMO there's not a bad album in the bunch - full lengths only because if you get me into singles this'll be a project. I left out the Postal Service because I saw it as more of a Gibbard project but Give Up would be pretty high

1. More Adventurous
2. The Execution of All Things
--Rabbit Fur Coat
--The Voyager
3. Take Offs and Landings
--Jenny and Johnny (I'm a sucker for it)
--Nice As Fuck
--On The Line
4. Rilo Kiley EP
5. RKives
--Acid Tongue (just a taste thing)
6. Under the Blacklight

I feel like you either love Under The Blacklight or you don't. It was my favorite Rilo Kiley album for a long time.

It's very true. This comes up on Reddit any time a Rilo Kiley restock happens too. Someone says NOW DO UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT and then someone else says they hate that and it devolves. My running theory is that it depends on when and how you found Rilo Kiley in the first place and to some extent the reasons you like them. Definitely a divisive album though.

I explained it to one of my students as: it obviously stands out as different from the work they did prior to it. And that wasn't what a lot of people were expecting when it came out.

It has high points for sure, but it's absolutely my least favorite thing they did.

I got into Rilo Kiley during the Execution cycle and tbh I was disappointed by Blacklight when it came out. But over the years that’s been the only one of their albums that I care to revisit. I guess that means I don’t like Rilo Kiley all that much!

Eh, theory not law. Can't win 'em all. :)

I just put on UTB and haven't moved much. Silver Lining is great and a couple other tracks are good tracks, but man if I never hear Dejalo or The Moneymaker or Dreamworld or Smoke Detector again I won't be too sad. Maybe it's just the bigger production I don't care for - I generally put on Rilo Kiley for the lyrics or the emotion of it. The writing is there is just gets washed out by the production decisions. Obviously all just opinions. I tend to like Jenny's more simply produced stuff too.

Edit: I think 15 is a good example. I really think the lyrical content of 15 is whip smart, good storytelling, evocative, all the good stuff. The weird faux country and vocal decisions just make it a much harder listen for me.

15 has always been my favorite song on that album

I will say also that my wife and I saw Rilo Kiley in concert twice on the UTB tour and it was amazing

I’m too lazy to look back pages, but Zach Bryan’s new one (a 3xLP) is up for preorder, but hooooooo boy. Ships in February of next year due to plant backups. But here’s the link if you’re into being patient.

Totally fair. A Rilo Kiley Reunion is at this point is my #1 dream concert which is something that could functionally happen, so they could say they'd do UTR only and I'd still be front row. I'm just imagining 15 sung in the style of Teenage Lovesong and daydreaming now.

The albums are just degrees of greatness in the end, I'd listen to any of them over and over again.

Also more of a repress but still a preorder, Joshua Ray Walker’s 2019 album, “Wish You Were Here” is getting another pressing this spring. It’s not selling for ridiculous amounts, but it’s also not got a lot of for sale listings. So anyway, here, you gift horse mouth looker inner.

I got the last colored vinyl copy of this back in 2020 and I am glad I did. Such a great record.

It's up now, if'n you want it. They have two variants, Piggy and Kermit.

I don't know how legit this is but Zavvi just sent me an alert that they also have this in "Animal Red".
