September 2020 Challenge Thread- The Gav-La’s

DAY 4
MEMORABILIA
MGMT - Little Dark Age
A very underrated album by a very underrated band, one of my favorites of 2018

And if I understand the theme correctly, shirts are eligible memorabilia, correct? So here is me rocking the shirt to go along with it! (P.S. it's very comfy)

Great start to day 4.. and yes you can interpret any way you like ...anything that relates to the record ..t shirts, gig tickets , love child etc

Day 4: “And now for something completely different..” ..any Record you like but with a piece of music related memorabilia to accompany it ...

This hat was given to crew members working this tour. It's a keeper. As is the music...

Sharon Van Etten – Tramp

I first saw Van Etten back in 2011, then again in 2012. I was a huge fan of hers at the time. Below is a venue poster I talked my way into at her show in 2012, and a link to a blog post with a brief account of the show and a bunch of photos.

Why I’ll need to leave”

The great thing about the Beatles is there is loads of stuff out there....here’s some magic mystery tour from 1967 bits - particularly like the cookie jar

Day 4: Memorabilia

Let's start off saying that I don't think of this record as a soundtrack to the movie. It's a thing of it's own.

This is a special limited packaging version - the usual front sleeve artwork is actually a 20 page booklet with photos and storyboards.

I also have this 30" x 40" British Quad poster from the 1999 Theatrical re-release.

I'd love to see a 2LP set of the complete concert on vinyl someday - although with this band it probably will never happen.

Ghost - Prequelle

Ghost is a Swedish rock/metal project. I’m a huge fan. Listening to their albums is almost like watching a campy horror film. Lots of references to the occult and Satan. When I saw them live a couple of years ago I picked up this poster at their merch table. The concert was one of the most fun shows I’ve ever been too.

Day 4: Memorabilia

I have a few (now very old) band t-shirts, ticket stubs from the late 90s/00s, and my son’s Beatles paraphernalia. But my take on today’s challenge are the random thing a that you sometimes find when you buy used records. I bought this Smiths album in Brazil and it came with a magazine cutout featuring Portuguese translations of Morrissey’s lyrics (and a poster on the other side). Who knows what the cut-out photo was...

Day 4: Memorabilia

Calexico / Iron & Wine - Years to Burn

Iron & Wine is my favourite artist and one of only two that I'm trying to collect all their major releases on vinyl. In 2005, he put out an album with Calexico called In the Reins and early last year announced that they had finally made a follow-up together, which came out in June. My girlfriend is also a huge fan and we were lucky to see them perform together in early February, one of my last shows before the lockdown. We got to the venue early and were front row centre, which was amazing. We asked for the setlist afterward and I was lucky to get Joey Burns from Calexico to sign it at the merch table afterward. Have to get it framed one of these days. It's still got the black hockey tape used to tape it to the stage, heh.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings "100 Days, 100 Nights" (2007 Daptone Records)

I posted pictures of this before but it's my absolute favorite piece of memorabilia. We went to see Sharon play at this small venue in Montreal in 2005. It was a small room, maybe 150-200 people maximum. Sharon and the gang gave an absolutely inspired performance - the whole room was dancing and having a blast. I remember being so sweaty, it was ridiculous. I don't think I ever got into a show like this. And the band was super generous - they played a solid 2 hours straight, alternating between singers (Binky Griptite did a few songs). When it was over, the band just left their instruments and walked into the crowd to mingle. This was my chance - see, I brought along a copy of the first ever 45 released by Daptone just in case. But I was too shy to approach anyone. So my wife just grabbed the record and went directly to speak with Sharon. She came back with a big red lipstick kiss on her cheek and the signed record! R.I.P. Sharon, you were awesome and you are missed. So here it is, a copy of the first 45 released by Daptone signed by Sharon Jones.

Blackalicious - Imani Vol. 1

When Blackalicious announced they were putting out a new album with a PledgeMusic campaign, I pre-ordered the signed CD (I didn't have any vinyl or a turntable back then). I never wait around at concerts to get signatures or anything, so this is one of the very few signed albums I have.

I’m a day behind, so apologies for interrupting the excellent merch displays...

Day 3: “Power Trio”- play a record by a Three Piece.

My pic is Cvrches. Lauren, Iain and Martin create excellent synth-pop / electro from Glasgow. I love this record; their second LP.
