September 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - 'Cause you can't, you won't, and you don't stop!

Day 14: “ Cause life ain’t nothing but a good groove, a good mixtape to put you in the right mood”

This is technically a (re)mix tape, but it sure puts me in a good mood. Caught Melanie Charles opening for Shabaka and the Ancestors on their recent tour and she just blew me away with her remix / interpretations of classic Verve tracks.

This is one of my favorite albums of last year. It's so original and an absolute delight.

Day 11: “Keyboard Money Mark you know he ain’t havin it, just give him some wood and he’ll build you a cabinet”.

Money Mark - Change Is Coming

Fun Fact: Money Mark started off as the Beastie Boys Carpenter (hence the “build you a cabinet” bars) after striking up a friendship with the band they discovered he was a Moog/synth/keyboard enthusiast and started including him in recordings. He and producer, Mario Caldato Jr. were kinda unofficial Beasties.

Day 12: “You think that you can front when revelation comes? Yeah, you can’t front on that”

Pastor T. L. Barrett - Like A Ship... (Without A Sail)

I’m taking “Revelation comes” from the Biblical sense though I am not sure that’s necessarily what MCA meant since the Boys were all brought up Jewish and Yauch was a practicing Buddhist. Regardless I figured Gospel Music would be a good choice for the end times.

Day 13: “I feel like Rufus Thomas, the crown prince of dance. I’m Mike D and I’m known for romance”

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Now I Got Worry

I don’t have any Rufus Thomas records but thankfully I have a few JSBX albums and and on this one, Thomas crows, growls, and sings lead on a track.

Also, the album was produced by Mario C and recorded at the Beastie Boys West Coast Studio G-Son AND Money Mark plays on the album too.

Various Artists -Tibetan Freedom Mixtape

In honor of today’s challenge I decided to make a modern mixtape (AKA a playlist) as you can probably deduce from the title, this playlist includes many artists that were featured at the benefit shows that were held annually at various locations during the last 4 years of the 90s. I tried to include only one song per artist and also attempted to choose songs that were popular around the time of each band’s appearance.

Day 15: “A butterfly floats on the breeze of a sunlit day, as I feel this reality gently fade away. Riding on a thought to see where it’s from, gliding through a memory of a time yet to come”

R.E.M. "Out Of Time" (1991 Warner Brothers; 2016 reissue)
The themes of this album seem appropriate for this quote. Being "out of time", whether it's running out of time or being outside of time itself. Plus the sides of the record are called "Time Side" and "Memory Side".

Studio Ghibli movies always have that timeless, just outside our reality feel to them. Mixing songs from different Ghibli movies w/ lo-fi beats fits right with todays prompt.

Flicka flicka flicka!
Here you are
Cata cata cata!
Caterpillar girl
Flowing in
And filling up my hopeless heart
Oh never never go
Dust my lemon lies
With powder pink and sweet
The day i stop
Is the day you change
And fly away from me
You flicker
And you're beautiful
You glow inside my head
You hold me hypnotized
I'm mesmerized...
Your flames
The flames that kiss me dead
Dust my lemon lies
With powder pink and sweet
The day i stop
Is the day you change
And fly away from me
Cata cata cata!
Caterpillar girl

Thought I’d go with something breezy & smooth, plus this album has a sorta nostalgic vibe to it (moreso than most retro-leaning records I have).
