September 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - 'Cause you can't, you won't, and you don't stop!

Day 8: “Rock my Adidas, never rock Fila”

I've always been a Vans fan myself...they're perfect for drumming. Not so much for long walks or hiking of course, especially in my old(er) age.

So these shoes were made by Vans to help small businesses around the country at the beginning of the pandemic. Most cities featured a skate shop, but the Detroit version was a little club in Mexican Town called El Club. Great spot to see a show; I caught JD there one night.

Day 12: “You think that you can front when revelation comes? Yeah, you can’t front on that”

Toad the Wet Sprocket - Dulcinea

9CD311EA-9D0F-4889-A72A-B292B7BD4643.jpeg

Toad was often mistaken for a Christian rock band in their heyday, and with songs like the lead track from Dulcinea, Fly From Heaven, it's hard not to see why:

Paul is making me nervous
Paul is making me scared
Walk into this room and swaggers
Like he's God's own messenger

The video was also chalk full of religious imagery

This one was a favorite of mine back in high school. It’s a truly beautiful album.

Day 9: “There’s more to me than you’ll ever know, and I’ve got more hits than Sadaharu Oh”.

Paul is a big baseball fan, so I'll play Still Crazy for this prompt.

Here are Oh's stats from 1975, the year this came out. (it was statistically one of his worst seasons as a pro)

Revelation 6:1-8

Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, "Come and see." And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come and see." Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another, and there was given to him a great sword. When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come and see." So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine." When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, "Come and see." So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.

Day 13: “I feel like Rufus Thomas, the crown prince of dance. I’m Mike D and I’m known for romance”

De La Soul "Buhloone Mind State" (1993 Tommy Boy; 2018 club reissue)
I might be doing a little Stretch Armstrong on this one. Record is produced by Prince Paul. "Breakadawn" includes a sample from the Bar-Kays track "Song and Dance". I hereby give him the title of crown prince of dance for this album.

Day 11: “Keyboard Money Mark you know he ain’t havin it, just give him some wood and he’ll build you a cabinet”

I was going to play my Money Mark album, but when I read it again it made me think of my creative partner, bass player extraordinaire, and good friend, who also happens to build furniture. He was the first person to play Reigning Sound for me; it was 'Since When' from Break Up/Break Down and is an exquisite opener. This one has a pretty great opener too....
