Television

Man now I'm going down a Meldrick Lewis rabbit hole on youtube. Homicide was so full of little scenes like this that meant nothing -- total throwaway scenes -- that didn't do anything except showcase exceptional acting and dialogue, and it probably also doesn't get quite enough credit for the number of black characters that interacted with each other on a regular basis as the only people on screen without resorting to stereotypical portrayals of gang members, victims of crime, or enslaved people.

Yo, is that Captain Raymond Holt!?!

Andre Braugher is wonderful.

I mean, look at this. Nearly 10 minutes in which Yaphet Kotto doesn't speak a word to Andre Braugher, and yet the whole scene is actually a dialogue between the two of them. What Pembleton does here is completely unethical, and everyone involved knows it, but the show is touching on so many things at once that it's impossible to look away.

Yaphet Kotto is a GOAT

I really should. I am sure it is streaming somewhere.

Edit: or maybe not.

I watched that series prior to The Wire. In fact it was because of HLOTS that I was so keen to watch The Wire. But I'm not sure how it holds up basically since The Wire just did what HLOTS did, but better. That episode in season 1 when McNulty and Bunk go through a crime scene only saying "fuck" for a few minutes was basically a shot at NBC and how they censored "fuck me boots" to "do me boots" on HLOTS. That said, the characters on HLOTS are great, the storylines completely different than anything else at the time (like the cops don't always solve cases) and in the end there wouldn't have been any of these great David Simon shows without it.

Yeah, I am usually able to appreciate a show within its context. I have season one downloading now. I will give it a go and if it’s worth while I will give go back in for the other 6 seasons.

Ok, so I just finished season one of Severance...

God, I loved Homicide back in the mid 90s. That was appointment television back then which was hard since NBC kept screwing it over. Frank and Bayliss were such a great team. 3 Men and Adena, Every Mother's Son, The City That Bleeds. The show had so many great conversations between the characters. Melissa Leo was such an underrated player on the show but she dominated every scene she was in.

This is one of my favorite scenes from the show.
