Television

I got caught up on Under The Banner Of Heaven. Andrew Garfield is excellent and sense of dread that saturates the screen throughout makes for brilliant TV. Has a bit of Season One True Detective crossed with Zodiac vibe to it.

I just watched the first two episodes of Vanessa Bayer’s new show, “I Love That For You” on Showtime. She and Molly Shannon star as tv shopping network hosts. It’s as dumb as it sounds but it’s fun and also has Matt Rogers who I love for several reasons:

  • He introduced me to Dua Lipa when he hosted Gayme show on Quibi (yes, Quibi)
  • He was one of the judges on Haute Dog, a dog grooming competition on HBO Max that is also pretty ridiculous except for the one episode they did with all rescue dogs which made me pretty emotional for like a weeek because the dogs were so precious
  • He cohosts a podcast with Bowen Yang called Las Culturistas which, if I’m being completely honest, is the only podcast I’ve listened to in a couple years now haha

Dyawannaknowhat? These clips have me a lot more excited about the Shoresy spinoff than imagining him chirping for 25 minutes while taking a shit each episode.

I was looking forward to Shoresy, simply because I love Letterkenny so much. This clip made me way more excited for it.

Started The Staircase…the HBO Max scripted limited series based on the case and original documentary series of the same name. This was a seminal true crime doc, one I’m well versed in. So it does the beg the question why does this exist and why am I watching it? I guess I’m just checking it out to see how they tackle the story 🤷🏻‍♂️. The most interesting angle about it is that it incorporates the fact that the documentary crew are there filming. That said, it feels super reminiscent of the doc series with its purposefully slow pace, gradual revelations, and even the music. The original doc is obviously better, but I’m surprised how much I am enjoying this. I think a lot of the casting is spot on. But as much as I enjoy it, I still can’t help but think it doesn’t need to exist.

Just started Severance with my wife over the weekend. Is it bad that it reminds me a lot of my job and the absurdities I deal with regularly?

It's so weird though... I just wanna keep watching it. It's like if someone took what Tommy Wiseau thought human interactions should be like and then just tweaked them a little to make them a twinge creepy (and also the actors are actually good).

This has sold me on checking it out.

Dukie got straight and became a cop too, good for him.

Seriously though seeing so many The Wire alumni switching from one side of the law to the other for We Own This City kind of makes a statement unto itself.

I wonder if that was a conscious decision in casting?
I think its probably a bit of it, right? There are bad cops and good cops. There a bad criminals and good criminals. The lines in Simon shows are so blurred I feel like it just adds to the greyness of it all by having the same actors play starkly different roles within the same setting. Simon also seems like a super loyal dude who is happy to help out actors that we worked with before. I never watched Homicide but I would suspect there are some actors that are still working with him from that.
