i know a lot of big fans of the Tolkien books who weren´t happy at all with the LOTR movies

Honestly if a lot of them had their way we’d have been sat in the cinema for 12 hours getting lectures about tree histories and listening to Tom Bombadil tell tales in rhyme without advancing the story at all…

I would love to hear what their qualms were, but they're very much in the minority on that one.

Huge swathes of the book were axed though. So if you’ve invested yourself in that it’s going to be hard to see beloved things cut even if it mean the story progesss and works in 2 or 3 hours.

Also I remember being lectured by someone back then about the treatment of elves and which ones glowed and which ones didn’t and how the film totally got the wrong blah blah blah. I don’t quite remember the specifics more switching off after a couple of minutes and thinking death was preferable to listening…

I try to be pretty respectful of fandoms and nerdisms cause we've all got them and, ya know, I collect records and give a shit about things like speaker sensitivity and THD.

But if I was at dinner table with someone and they started going on about elf glow I'd have to get my plate to go.

Then again, I did listen at work yesterday to three of my troops debate which element would be the best to be able to bend in the Avatar Last Airbender universe and I knew absolutely nothing about it. So, really, I'd probably just keep shoveling food in my face.

Omg yes finally. THIS is the Star Wars show I've been waiting for. Andor is great so far. So stoked for the rest of this to air. Amazing confidence to just tell a story without fan service and call backs to all the same characters over and over again. And holy hell it looks incredible.

Worse than dinner. It was in a pub. The pub is supposed to be fun! All I said is that I liked the films which I didn’t think was that controversial, it totally is to the wrong audience lol.

I might try this out. I never got into the Mandelorian. My favorite of the new era Star Wars movies has been Rogue One by far because there was little fan service and minimal call backs to the same characters over and over again. It was the only movie that felt fresh.

I can relate, but it's usually sports ball conversations that I inadvertently get sucked into.

I can relate. This is a special skill I have developed over the years. I could talk a good 10-15 minutes about the local sports ball team. The trick is to steer the conversation to how good the sports ballers was back when so-and-so was pitcher/goalie/quaterback.

I didn’t watch Rogue One…shamefully. And I haven’t watched any of the shows except Mandolorian. Would I still be able to follow Andor? I’m super interested in it.

It's a prequel to Rogue One so really you'd be going in the right order. I see no reason why you need to see it first. You definitely don't need to see any of the other shows. But you gotta watch Rogue One after you finish Andor.

That's good to know. I just never got around to Rogue One, but having it to watch after will make me watch it now

In my opinion Rogue One is the best of all of the new Star Wars. I'd put it third behind Star Wars and Empire as the top 3 Star Wars movies. But I like gritty (mostly) serious Star Wars vs the more pulpy stuff.
I have heard it’s the best one. I was pretty let down with the new trilogy. I liked some parts of it, but as a whole story it was pretty basic and too fan-servicey - especially the Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker. Last Jedi I actually enjoyed a bit of.

It’s the best one because it’s the least beholden to the Skywalker saga. They smartly took one throwaway line from the original trilogy and turned it into a standalone feature length film. Similar to the best episodes of The Mandolorean, where it’s allowed to be its own thing for the most part. Solo is surprisingly good too except for the eye rolling moments where it goes out of its way to make references to the original films.

Rogue One isn't even near the dame category as the new trilogy. It gave me one of the best "are they actually gonna...?" moments in the franchise, and is definitely in the top 3 overall for me.

Very late to the party, but I’ve been watching Joe Pera Talks With You. Around the end of the second season, I suddenly got hugely emotionally invested, which blindsided me. It’s a remarkable balance of tone, and I think a lot of the big emotions it deals with are well served by the gentle stoicism of everyday life as depicted in the show.

Whoever pulled the plug on this belongs in prison.

It’s one of my favorites. It seems unlikely but I would be ecstatic if Netflix or another streamer picked it up. I doubt it’s too expensive to shoot.
