Television

I've not watched Deadwood yet, so I can't speak to it, but fully agree with The Wire and Sopranos at 1 and 2. And fully disagree with Oz not being on the least at all.
I feel like you’d likely enjoy Deadwood. It’s a Western we’re everything is as dirty, violent and vile as you expect the Wild West actually was. Just don’t watch this t around the kids unless you want them to start running around calling everyone a “Cock Sucker”.

Here's my HBO contribution to the thread

My top three are interchangeable - The Wire - The Sopranos - Deadwood
Any order, they are all excellent.

A few more ranked
Six Feet Under (THE greatest finale I've seen)
Band of Brothers
Game of Thrones (If it stayed as excellent as S1 through 3 in the final seasons I'd have it higher)
Barry
True Detective (S1 was amazing, S2 was ok, S3 was almost back to S1 form but they never recaptured the creepiness of S1)
The Leftovers
Succession
The White Lotus
Chernobyl
The Pacific

I love the limited series like Generation Kill, We Own This Town and Chernobyl. But I think including them in the same list as longer running series is not right. Also ranking active series like Barry/White Lotus/Succession against finished ones is not valid ranking system.
Yeah, I thought of that while making my list...but for this list I just went with the shows that have had the most watchability for me.

Is Barry done? That finale made me think so, and it seemed a perfect ending. But I do love the cast, so I guess if more is to come, I'll see what the creators come up with.

One more season at least. I think Winkler said it was likely to be the last.

Watched the first two episodes of National Treasure this morning. This show is looking really promising. Can't wait for episode 3 next week.

I don't know if anybody here is watching it yet, but my wife and I have really been enjoying Welcome To Chippendales so far. It's on Hulu, and has a great cast... Kumail Nanjiani, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, Annaleigh Ashford, Andrew Rannels and more.

Does the Sopranos hold up? I only ever watched the first season. It didn’t really feel like my thing, but I wonder if I should give it another shot.

But I haven’t watched Deadwood or The Wire yet either and I feel like those are higher priority. Not sure that I’ve seen all of Band of Brothers either.

I also haven’t finished Mad Men (saw the first two seasons) or Breaking Bad (saw about half of the first season).

So basically, I missed the whole golden age of television, haha.

I was just gonna ask, what have you been watching on TV over the past 20 years? Mad Men and Breaking Bad combined with all the HBO shows you list would probably make up a good portion of my Favorite Shows of all time.

Also, The Sopranos does holds up well. One thing about the show that is excellent is that David Chase really captured the time and place this show was set. We rewatched the series during the early days of Covid and it feels like a turn of the millennia time capsule.

Haha glad to hear it. My favorites are probably Parks and Rec, Game of Thrones, Veep, Leftovers, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, Happy Endings, Succession, White Lotus, and Barry. I’m sure I’m forgetting quite a few. I watched all of Boardwalk Empire and was impressed by it, but didn’t really enjoy it until maybe the last couple seasons. I loved the first season of Westworld. Battlestar Galatica was fine but really uneven. Further back, I was really into Alias and Lost and Fringe. And the Practice. And Dharma and Greg. And Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place.

I’m of the opinion who thinks Breaking Bad is the best TV show of all time. It’s such a trip. I’d watch that one first if I were you.
