Television

For anyone like me, that sees a historical show/movie and has to read up on to see what's accurate/not accurate it I've found a few good wiki entries:

Mountain Meadows Massacre - Wikipedia (at no point did they stop, or were near Fort Briger - it appears the whole Briger story was just tossed in).

Wild Bill Hickman - Wikipedia (also unexpected Jim Bridger link in the "Beheading of Old Elk" section)

Mountain Meadows was one of those things they somehow completely jumped over when singing the praise of "our pioneer forbears" in Sunday School growing up... Only learned about it as an adult when I started reading the kind of books the leaders labeled as "anti-Mormon."

As a Canadian it's not something we're ever taught, so I kind of started down one long rabbit hole when I googled Brigham Young and realized the story is loosely based on historical events.

My wife is from Utah, and she never even heard a mention of it growing up, in school or otherwise.
I think I first learned about this after watching the excellent FX adaptation of Under The Banner Of Heaven piqued my interest in the seedy underbelly of the churches founding. I then found one of those poorly acted History Channel documentaries available streaming and while it was a bit of a slog it did highlight some of the more unpleasant areas of the LDS past.

I've only had time to watch the first hour so far, but I found it fantastic. Can't wait to get back to it this weekend.
The one very minor quibble is that it would have been nice if they showed a few of the legendary performances in their entirely. One of the most frustrating things about SNL’s online presence is how much content remains unavailable. Would love to be able to go on to peacock or an online database and pull up any live performance and every sketch. If they are not gonna make that stuff available then it would be nice if they included some of those performances in a three hour music documentary.

A companion piece with full performances would probably get nearly as many views as the doc itself. I'd watch for sure.

One of the best parts is the segment about Fear’s 1981 performance where they interview a now 74 years old Lee Ving who at this point seems like someone’s kindly grandfather until he rips into a bit of “Beef Bologna” and he sounds exactly the same he did when he was 30.

Does anyone watch Mythic Quest?

I watched the pilot episode last night and was not impressed. It didn’t feel like I pilot. It felt like a season finale or something where a lot of story had already happened. It wasn’t too funny, didn’t like any of the characters too much. It felt like it needed more scene setting. Does it get better?

I love Mythic Quest but I don't remember much about the pilot. I'd say at least give it a few more episodes.
