I’d keep the 70s pressing if it’s in decent shape (VG/VG+) or better. The Classic reissue doesn’t have the same charm. I love used records and don’t like really nice things, what can I say.I have a similar inclination to get all of these Classic Reissues but this raises a question for this thread: Assuming you keep just one copy of a release, under what circumstances do you a replace another version in your collection with a Classic reissue?
My quick thoughts:
1) If your current copy is a Scorpio, a BN 75th, or a DMM from the 1980s, you should replace it.
2) But what about the 1970s reissues?
3) What about an OG pressing that's not in great condition?
As for OG pressings in rough condition… I have a few of those, and if it’s an album I really like them I’d buy the reissue and keep both, one for historical value and the new one for listening (that’s what I did with albums like Money Jungle and Lonnie Smith’s Listen!).
But if it’s an OG I don’t care much for, then I pass on the reissue (I experienced that with Stanley Turrentine’s Hustlin’, which I bought on a whim for $4 and realized it was an OG, but eventually decided I don’t really like it so I didn’t but the Tone Poet reissue).
