The Blue Note Thread

If any of you follow blue note and other jazz sales sales on eBay or jazz people on instagram, you might know of “strictlyheadies,” who today is selling the last batch of a jazz treasure trove of a large collection, almost all in top condition. He’s been selling the is collection for at least a year.

He’s widely followed, so his sales usually command high prices. But occasionally, something slips through the cracks at below market value for no apparent reason, but I’ve never been the beneficiary of that until today.

Today, I won his auction for this 1957 version of Milt Jackson with John Lewis, Monk, et al. It’s not the most in-demand title, but $59 for a VG++ copy of a DG/ear BN is damn good these days.

I've been following him for a while. That collection was bananas.

Are you willing to share that instagram account? I’ve bought from a few of those Instagram accounts/sellers with no issues, but I’m buying blind in a sense, trusting that they’ve garnered a good following and reputation. I don’t want to get burned!
Sure. As a caveat I personally didn't buy anything from him so im only going off what I saw on instagram, but it was Chris "TunesFromTheManCave".

There was 1 large post that an Instagram user wrote essentially saying that they paid for some records that never arrived and after messaging Chris, he blocked them. Once that post was uploaded a load of other people started sharing similar experiences with him and began to get Paypal and the likes involved to get their money back. He has quite a large following across all his social media accounts.

I grabbed this shirt online from the Gap recently and it just arrived today - it's actually a really nice shirt and am happy I was able to get it for under $20 during a sale last week.

That shirt makes you look like a completely different person!

Broad question but figured y’all might have some perspective. My local just got a solid jazz collection in, Blue notes, riverside, impulse, etc.

What must have Blue Notes haven’t been reissued in the classics/tone poet series?
man.....that's a tall task. the short of it is that i think MOST will be reissued in BNC or tone poet.

anything that was a Music Matters pressing will likely only be done as a BNC.

There are a few titles like Sweet Honey Bee by Duke Pearson which have tape damage and will likely not have any AAA reissues done again. Also likely that many Impulse titles won't be done AAA again since many tapes were supposedly lost in the Universal fire.

What's your local and how decent is the pricing of the albums?

They're at or slightly below Discogs comps, mostly 70s pressings of classic albums - all blue labels.

Every one that I wanted had a recent TP/Classics version, so I stuck with the Impulse titles (Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Coltrane - Coltrane) that I didn't have for now.

nice! those 70s pressings can be pretty good! but yea--i think most of the BN catalogue is gonna get the TP and BNC treatment. don't see them stopping that anytime soon.

Thanks for sharing. What's the point of 24bit mp3s?

Too bad BN are not taking this one up in the Classic series. Elemental vinyl is all digital. Hopefully they will at least do the original gatefold.

They are legit licensed, but for a reason they don't disclose source or mastering.
VMP did this one way back in the day and I don't think it was analog. I just sold it on Discogs for a decent amount, which was nice.

I believe Kevin couldn’t talk about it was the gist of the quote back then (referencing all their blue notes at the time)

He pretty heavily implied they were digital later on
I have it. It is excellent. At least you know with the VMP who mastered it. With Elemental you don't (likely the digital file was sent to the pressing plant and the lacquer or DMM plates were cut in house).

I think the VMP was 2017? At that time, KPG was heavily invested in Music Matters titles, so there is that conflict - he maybe wanted to help out MM and his studio or may have even had an agreement with MM of some sort. I know that MM (Ron) frequently passed misinformation around to puff up MM.

The Donald Byrd - Fancy Free around that time was speculated to be a digital source also, I have that one, it is just a beautiful sounding record.
