The Crate Digging & Bargain Bin Finds Thread

Flea market was almost empty today. Picked up Pee Wee and Chairry.

Then I dug a bit at the indoor market up the road, found a few goodies. Clean Sly seems scarce now.

The jazz record is interesting; trio minus a drummer (you!) for practice purposes. I was never aware of the music minus one label. BC226A64-4B26-4E9A-BD36-9A9D3ACC97D5.jpeg5E83C4B8-9951-47FD-9E71-17E49ADB2339.jpeg

The used book store had a real interesting batch yesterday. Usually they are heavy on the early 70s staples, yesterday someone dropped off a fairly rough late 70s and mid 80s hair and hard rock drop (G/VG level sleeves and a lot of grime that seems to mostly clean to VG levels). Couldn't resist some $4 pickups at that rate to put the cleaner to work (the basin is a swamp now). Also got some more fun poppy choices (Billy Joel, Grease, Meat Loaf, S&G, Steely Dan) for the better half and a couple interesting titles from other genres. A selection below. Interestingly the Ruffin is blocked for sale on Discogs due to a copyright complaint it seems

Some fun ones this weekend from the bargain bin ($4 per). People were oddly...grumpy I guess this week? When I was walking in I saw a guy with two boxes of vinyl in his backseat, I'm unsure if he cleared the place out and people were mad about it or if he is dropping off a huge donation for next weekend (I'd guess the latter, I don't think at the very minimum the Louis/Oscar would have been there for me to find if he was grabbing that much), but not super great vibes. The angriest one swiped by all of these, so maybe it was other genres he wanted.

First, my mother's boyfriend is notoriously hard to buy for for Christmas. He doesn't drink much, doesn't listen to much music, and he often buys what he wants before Xmas comes. However, he is a huge retro Wonder Woman fiend. This wasn't exactly a deal (like I think I could buy a good copy online for like $10 shipped), but the number of releases with the 60s and 70s era Wonder Woman in photos is minimal and the condition on this one isn't terrible for a 70s kids record. I will likely end up framing it for him. It'll save December Ryan some real pressure. Unknown Artist - Wonder Woman

Second, I normally don't end up grabbing those 80s and 90s hip hop singles unless it's something fitting a perfect niche - where you really only want one song and the other versions that come with it. Thus... L.L. Cool J - Rock The Bells (7 minute original version on the B Side)

Finally, a couple 50s era jazz finds I had to give a shot. The jacket condition on both are pretty (Oscar) to really (Ella) rough, but I'm a huge sucker for the nostalgia and inherent "cool" factor of jazz pressings of this age. Old School Cool if you will. Ella Fitzgerald - Sings The Cole Porter Songbook and Louis Armstrong & Oscar Peterson - Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson. - Both are original 50s presses.

This week's tease was a nice looking sleeve of The Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me...with a 50's comp in it. Given the number of folks who picked it up, looked, and put it down like I did, I'm guessing it wouldn't be there for me if it was the whole package, alas. It doesn't stack up to finding an empty sleeve of this one (I still bought the empty sleeve for $4 - I figure I'll be able to complete someone's Frankenstein attempt with it some day. I definitely pruned some of the surrounding ones hoping that the disc was in a mismatched sleeve or even loose but it was not to be).

I'll put up pics in a bit.

Some pretty good bin diving today.
Had about 45 mins to hit Vertical House Records in Huntsville, AL between meetings.

Dropped a $20 for these three.
I'll put them through the deep clean tomorrow to see how they spin.

Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd- Jazz Samba- 1966

Jeff Beck- Truth- 1973

Doors- Absolutely Live- mid to late 70s?

My favorite local record dealio of the year is here - Market Days Record and Poster sale. It's great - lots of donated records and CD (the CDs were really good, I may go back this afternoon or tomorrow for that), cheap prices for all but the very collectible LPs, great day to really stock up on collection items especially those $0-$10 type records that often hit $5 in thrift bins in 2022.

I won't picture everything because none of ya want to see like...the Deliverance Soundtrack or the stock up of Grover Washingtons. With that said, here's seven of my favorite grabs that were $1.

Dolly Parton – New Harvest ... First Gathering - Last year I was able to grab Trio for $1. This year I went back to the Dolly well and found this mid-70s Dolly release among some of her 80s output. Really nice shape (I feel like some of the 70s country stuff is a wildcard) and condition

Mike Seeger, Peggy Seeger, Penny Seeger - American Folk Songs For Christmas and Pete Seeger – Traditional Christmas Carols - Their Christmas box is mostly all of the old goodies (I might go back for Bing, also grabbed some OG Mannheim and Dolly/Kenny), but I'm growing increasingly fond of hunting for certain label outputs. The trio of Seegers are a fairly obscure 80s Rounder press and the Pete is Folkways.

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits - OK, this is everywhere, but $1 good condition Dylan of any kind is worth it and I have a severe lack of Dylan on wax..

Alice Cooper – Welcome To My Nightmare - The harder rock items really aren't plentiful at this sale but the upside is that when they do appear, they tend to be in good shape whereas hard rock from other thrift locations can be in terrible shape. Nice little grab.

Cat Mother And The All Night Newsboys* – The Street Giveth.. And The Street Taketh Away - This was one I was not familiar with going into this, it's kind of fun watching exactly how evident Elvis and The Beatles were on artists coming to prominence in the late 60s. and I don't even know how to describe these dudes - produced by Jimi Hendrix and trying a ton of different things.

Skip King – Skip King's Endless Journey - Never heard of this? Neither had I. That was the appeal - if I am crate digging and see some weird private press that like 10 people have, I buy it if it's cost reasonable because I like the mystery.. Some of them have been...not really worth it (that Japanese Broadway knockoff or culty Southern religious album for instance) but this? Mannnnnn. It's so cool. I was describing it to a friend and I described it as if you took Orville Peck, used a time machine to bring him back 50 years, and then infused elements of Elvis into a psych rock atmosphere...then had him cover some of the bigger folk tracks of the time. This one is signed by...someone. Might be Skip well after he stopped recording, could be a random dude, and the sleeve is rough, but still. Some rad dude (not me, I am not rad) uploaded a vinyl rip to Youtube. I implore you if this sounds interesting at all to just choose a song or two in this video. I think it'll be worth your time.

The Doors and Jeff Beck sound really solid after cleaning. Very happy.
Jazz Samba has some really beautiful music but covered with white crackle noise that cleaning doesn't seem to correct.
This one looked the cleanest out of the 3 too. Maybe damaged from a cheaper needle and cart setup over the years... bummer for such a nice looking record.

Found this in a cranny of a cluttered, relatively disorganized basement of a record store in Brunswick, Maine. Wasn't a bargain (one of those places that only prices their stuff when you say you want to buy it, with no consideration for how deeply you dug to find it), but a cool find nonetheless. I cleaned the vinyl yesterday and listened to the record, which is super clean and quiet. Inside of the gatefold had a bit of a powdery coating near the top of the crease, which must have been where the pot was sorted before rolling the joints. Always was one of the more efficient ways to roll those seeds out of there!

So I was playing one of the $1 ones I didn’t mention and a thought came to mind : what are some of your favorite actual $1ish thrift store regular sightings? Like albums that are there that are legit look listens but we’re way over produced.

The thought that brought that on was Linda Ronstadt’s Greatest Hits Vol 2 which has Linda just weaving her way through some great tunes.
