The Dark Side; Digital audio equipment recommendations and setup.

I'll download it right away when it becomes available. Worst come to worst, I just keep going like I do now and run the bluenode through tidal connect, which is essentially the only service I use with it any more. The blueos I just use to modify settings (like the presets, but I pretty much just settled on having those pointing to the Tidal My Mixes). Who knows, if the interface is better, maybe I'll use it more and start exploring different services.

Most of the time I think the ideal is a streamer whose software only exists to let you modify settings and allows you to use the streaming services own app as your controller without a loss in sound quality.

Exactly how I think. Either do it extremely well or get out of the way completely.

I don’t know with my clumsy fat thumbs, I kind of like the fact that I can just fool around Qobuz’s app and not accidentally screw up whatever I’m listening to.

That's what the FiiO R7 does. Essentially a big Android phone, you just download the apps you want to use. I am not keen on the form factor but like the concept

I guess the issue is chicken and egg scenario. Qobuz has no idea how to run a node. So node has the throne for gating the controls because it needs to code for multiple services.

I consider BlueOS and Roon as competitors at this point. I like Roon too but not worth the extra dough with a Node in the house.

Yeah the eversolo is pretty much the same but in the normal form factor of gear, ie wide rather than tall. Soemthing like that which gave me the option of usb out rather than having an internal DAC may just about be perfect but then that’s pretty much what an iPad is…

If committed to digital, I would probably do both Roon and node. But it is 80% vinyl here and likely not ever changing.
Working from home full time really upped my streaming listening. I also love the Denafrips DAC. The sound quality is VERY good on it. I like having music on during the work day but often don’t have the time to spin records. According to Roon I stream about 30 hours a week. Then weekend listening is like 90% vinyl for me when I can properly sit down and pay attention to the music.

I should do this instead of watching CNBC 🥸

I’m assuming CF means
cluster fuck

So, besides the glossy cardboard DAC and the Denafrip, what other DACs come highly recommended that aren’t super pricey?

I keep trying to rationalise swapping my PS Audio for a shiit Freya and one of these.

Topping have a following but the reviews make them sound like they might be a bit clinical sounding. The shiit dacs also have a decent following.

You can load the Apple Music app onto the Eversolo DMP-A6 so it can do lossless natively as well. I think that may also be the case with the Fiio, but I’m not sure on that one.
