The February Record Spin Challenge - It's All Connected, Maaaannnnn

21. Play an album you would recommend to a new fan of yesterday’s artist.

The Faint "Wet From Birth"
(2004 Saddle Creek)
This one is a little backwards for me today because Billy Nomates would most often be the answer to the question as opposed to the prompt. Billy Nomates is post-punk, but with a healthy dose of electronics and vocals that would be at home in a honky-tonk bar. And a little vitriol in the lyrics. So if you like that, I think The Faint would be a good thing to sample. Punk with electronics, sung vocals and a touch of vitriol.

Day 18. Play an album you acquired from the same source, store, or method as yesterday’s pick.
The Amazing Rhythm Aces - Stacked Deck

While back in Springfield, IL in September visiting the In-Laws I swung by some of the local record stores and picked up a few things besides the excellent David Bromberg record, I also grab this wonderful Mid 70s Southern Rock album.

Day 19. Play an album with similar themes to yesterday’s album.

Outlaws - Outlaws.

Like Amazing Rhythm Aces, The Outlaws were another mid 70s Southern Rock act and their self titled debut deals with in many of the same tropes as Stacked Deck. Sounds about life and love while romanticizing the Wild West. Where they differ is in their guitar play Hughie Thomasson shreds and his guitar play really elevates this album.

Day 20. Play anything from a different continent than yesterday’s spin.

I feel like Kikagaku Moyo shares a similar vibe to this particular King Gizz album. It’s probably my favorite KGATLW album though I must admit I am probably like 15 albums behind at this point.

Day 22. Play an album that takes itself less seriously than yesterday’s.

Jonathan Richman - It's Time For Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers

As far as artists that “don’t give a fuck” King Gizz is tough to top but I think Jonathan Richman might be the least self conscious person in Rock Music.

23. Play something that uses rhythm in a similar way to yesterday’s album.

Tracking my connections thus far: Howard Jones --> Drive~By Truckers --> Kraftwerk --> David Bowie --> Muppets --> Debbie Gibson --> Bob Dylan --> Mike Ness --> Os Mutantes --> Tropicalia --> Emerson Lake & Palmer --> Skankin' Pickle --> Rolling Stones --> Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit --> Bob Dylan --> Johnny Cash --> Metallica --> Doobie Brothers --> Linda Ronstadt --> Nick Drake --> John Martyn --> Danny Elfman

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure has a circus rhythm to it, especially the Breakfast Machine. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite always weirded me out as a kid with it's psychedelic take on circus music.

The Beatles ~ Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

Reed was a huge influence on Richman.

24. Play something in a different format (physical or digital) than yesterday’s pick.

Since Neil hasn't re-released this on vinyl (yet), Hey Ho, Away We Go to the archives.
