Julien Baker - Little Oblivions

Low's lyrics are full of little references to Mormon theology, and often express a struggling or wrestling with faith and the church, alongside references to struggles with addiction. Julien Baker also wrestles with faith and addiction on this album.

Arlo Parks – Collapsed In Sunbeams

Arlo Parks and Amythyst Kiah both feature intimate and unflinching explorations of trauma and heavier topics such as mental health, body image, racial and sexual identity, addictions, and suicide.

Purchased at Selecter Records, a wonderful shop that existed way back when. It was owned by Warren Haynes' brother and sister in-law, Brian and Susan. Great people. Great store.

Here's another gem purchased there...

The Dream Syndicate - Medicine Show

Muyiwa Kunnuji's Osemako – A.P.P. (Accumulation of Profit & Power)

Arlo Parks is European, born in England. Osemako is technically European also, formed in France, but Muyiwa Kunnuji is African from Nigeria and Osemako wouldn't exist if it weren't for him so I'm counting it!

On Medicine Show, Steve Wynn took The Dream Syndicate into a new realm with longer songs involving more involved narratives of losers and love lost.

Mark Knopfler is also pretty good at that...

Day 21 Play an album you would recommend to a new fan of yesterday’s artist

Blackfoot "Millie" - This was the first Zamrock album I ever heard and it blew my mind! Just gritty garage/psych music mixed with traditional sounds and language from Zambia it was really eye opening! Made me look for music outside my "comfort zone" stuff that's really not all that different and yet is still unique in its own way. There is unfortunately very few Zamrock releases because they are very hard to find in good condition and usually the source materials are in rough shape. There are still labels out there looking for more music all the time so I'm always keeping my eyes open!

Tracking my connections thus far: Howard Jones --> Drive~By Truckers --> Kraftwerk --> David Bowie --> Muppets --> Debbie Gibson --> Bob Dylan --> Mike Ness --> Os Mutantes --> Tropicalia --> Emerson Lake & Palmer --> Skankin' Pickle --> Rolling Stones --> Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit --> Bob Dylan --> Johnny Cash --> Metallica

Both Metallica ~ Metallica and this album were picked up at the same spot, my local Reanimated Records. At very different price points, I think this was $3. And worth every penny.

Doobie Brothers ~ Best of the Doobies

Both yesterdays album (Best of the Doobies) and todays are 70's era greatest hits compilations. Both sub $5 price points, and both worth every penny.

Linda Ronstadt ~ Greatest Hits

Sticking with the 70's vibe, but moving across the pond.

Nick Drake ~ Pink Moon

The title track of this release is dedicated to Nick Drake - who was a friend of Johns, and there's definitely a similarity in sound between the two.

John Martyn ~ Solid Air

Fela & The Africa 70 – Roforofo Fight

If somebody is digging Osemako, I would direct them all the way back to the source! Muyiwa Kunnuji cut his teeth with Fela Kuti, so it's a pretty logical step.

Although not immediately obvious, there are a few times on this record where it sounds like it could have been written to be a Crowded House (or Finn Brothers) song. Maybe I’m just thinking this because it sounds like he’s about to sing the chorus to “Fall At Your Feet” in this track:

Day 22 Play an album that takes itself less seriously than yesterday’s

Edan "Primitive Plus" - yesterday you had a group of friends that wanted to be a band so bad they made their own instruments! Today I present the humble magnificent Edan! I wouldn't say he's not serious about his craft he just sounds effortless when rapping and doesn't always have serious subject matter!

Coming off a couple of days of introspective 70's singer/songwriters, Pee-Wee's Breakfast Machine is a nice change of pace.
