Its quite confusing...I think they traded their pick next year to the Hawks to offload the awful Crabbe contract that Marks signed. They traded their 1st rounder from this year's draft to LA for the Sixers 1st rounder next year that is protected. So they will have a 1st rounder but maybe not their own? I see conflicting reports on it now...Damn they are still bleeding picks to Boston? That has to be the worst trade in sports history.
It is still an NBA death sentence though...maybe not quite as bad as it was in the future but Dominique Wilkins is the only guy in the history of the NBA to come back to close to full strength after an achilles tear. People are saying "if anybody can come back from it, it's KD!" which is just not true. It has nothing to do with KD.
KD was never going to come here alone. We would have also tried to sign Kyrie or another max player at which point we likely would have gotten closer to the playoffs while KD was out and either just missed or gotten an 8th seed and gotten knocked out in the first round.
The Nets do not have their own pick next season, so their record does not affect their team going forward. Them getting knocked out in the first round gives their players more playoff experience and there is no downside for them.
Also, Woj is saying today that the Knicks not wanting to offer KD the max didn't affect his decision to go to BK and his injury and Kyrie deciding on going to Brooklyn was more of a deciding factor.
Woj is saying that the Knicks did not leak this at all as a result of them not signing KD. Take it with a grain of salt though because while Woj has great sources for free agency news and trades, his actual reporting is quite dog shit. But Woj said today that KD went to Brooklyn because Kyrie was hell bent on going there. Had Kyrie been wanting to go to the Knicks more, the Knicks would have likely pushed harder and offered KD the max. KD didn't have meetings with anybody.Any team in any spor
KD wasn't going to the Knicks even with another superstar
It's not a death sentence, KD is relatively young and very slim, which maybe relieves some of the stress on the healing achilles. I'll believe it when I see it, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he returns to full strength
I maintain the conspiracy theory that all of this narrative about Dolan not wanting to offer KD max years and dollars has everything to do with him trying to save face with a fanbase that wants to believe that the team is making reasonable decisions, when in reality superstars don't want to play for their extremely screwed-up franchise.
The Nets are not just more appealing because of the Kyrie signing. They have spent tons of Chinese dollars on facilities, medical support, caretaking of their player assets, etc. They want to create an environment where players feel rewarded. The Knicks want to rely on the Knick name and legacy as their biggest selling points.

And I agree that the Nets are more appealing currently because they just did a 5 year rebuild that worked and they made the playoffs with mostly role players. The Knicks are slowly starting to go that direction and I hope that FA this season helped them realize that more. I like the signings we did end up making this offseason especially now that they all supposedly have team options next year. That makes those contracts very tradeable or good for us if the guys play well.
Maybe we will find out soon enough about why KD and Kyrie decided to go there. But I think the direction they have moved in the last 5 years was truly a factor in it. They put together a winning team without any true superstars (I don't really consider DLo a true superstar yet) . With stars they should theoretically be able to do even better. They had cap space, medical staff, etc and were on an upwards trend. Knicks aren't anywhere near that yet.Players don't just care about winning or winning potential. In the modern NBA superstars want other things. Lebron wants roster control. Kawhi wants to be able to rest and be left alone, KD wants/needs the right medical staff, Butler wants to be the main man on the team. The last 5 years of the Nets growth is a limited factor in their signings. Cap space and the other stuff matter more.

Philly's moves have been most interesting to me. I think losing Jimmy and JJ really hurts, but at least they got something out of it. Horford seems like a weird pairing too with Embiid but their defense will be pretty impressive next year. This FA as been crazier than any I remember. Half the teams have a completely new look.
I know this isn't fitting the narrative...but...
And Randle has a team option in year 3. We also got Payton on a 1+1 team option...
Yea I'm still trying to process it all tbh. Parts I like and parts I dont like. Hopefully they still have room to add a shooter, because right now I feel like losing JJ was a bigger deal than losing JimmyPhilly's moves have been most interesting to me. All those contracts are now very tradeable with the team options. And also give us team control if those guys play well. Not getting the max guys sucks, but this is not a bad offseason entirely for us. Can't believe they got all these guys to give a team option.Just found out about Payton and the options on all of these and my mood has improved considerably.
To see evidence of this, all you need to do is look at how the NBA media is talking about DeAndre Jordan’s deal. I saw articles yesterday referring to him as the third piece of a “Big Three”. I totally understand why they have to look like they’re taking him seriously if they want to stay in his/KD’s good graces.Players don't just care about winning or winning potential. Agreed. Surprised that Payton and Portis couldn’t get two year deals. All those contracts are now very tradeable with the team options. And also give us team control if those guys play well. Agree with you there...who do they go to in crunch time now with Jimmy gone? And what shooters do they have outside of Richardson now? I'm really surprised they let JJ walk...especially since there was a report that he wanted to retire in Philly just hours before.Yea I'm still trying to process it all tbh. I'm higher on Tobias than most and think he is their best shooter and probably who is going to take a decent amount of end game shots. I mostly just think they are going to have to out defend/out 2pt shoot people. I think Horford is going to free Embiid up a lot on the low post. If Simmons can improve his FT% and take it to the hole without fear of going to the line then I think they are clear favorites in the east. Add a shooter and they are clear favorites to win it all imo.Agree with you there...who do they go to in crunch time now with Jimmy gone? And what shooters do they have outside of Richardson now? I like Tobias too but I would have kept Jimmy over him in an ideal world. I think they overspent on Tobi. Simmons is the huge wildcard. They lost shooting though this offseason which is really rough especially with Ben being so awful at shooting. Even if he adds a midrange or some sort of shot and isn't afraid to take a jumper, it helps that team.I'm higher on Tobias than most and think he is their best shooter and probably who is going to take a decent amount of end game shots. I kept going back and forth on which one I'd rather keep. Yes Jimmy is the more proven commodity, but hes just about to come out of his prime while Tobi is just going into his prime, so as far as a 5 year deal goes I do feel more comfortable handing one to Tobias than Jimmy, even if I think Jimmy is the better player (not by much) now.I like Tobias too but I would have kept Jimmy over him in an ideal world. Maybe, maybe, yes, and yes.Can they beat the Bucks, Pacers with a healthy Oladipo, Boston, and a Kawhi-less Raptors in the playoffs?
