Because of the Questlove book and the Mark Ronson show, I’ve been watching old Yo! MTV Raps and listening to old hip hop albums. I really miss the golden age. I don’t know if it’s the curation of the episodes or editing or rights issues but so far Yo! Has been mostly stuff I really dig.

I had not read the book entry on this until today. The book frames this as a Kiss style tongue in cheek thing. I wish I had read it when I listened. I wondered if I would have thought differently about it.

I think this quote from the cover of the album is funny:

Yep, they were a bit tongue in cheek about the satanic image. Still sucked though, IMO. This is an interesting contrast to Eminem actually, who is also a somewhat tongue-in-cheek provocateur, but objectively does it brilliantly musically. Which one is actually "worse"?

The b-movie-horror-Addams-Family-esque harpsicord riff in "The Real Slim Shady" is still one of my favourite parts of any song of all time. And "Kim" is one of the most disgusting songs ever put to tape, where there are no extenuating circumstances such as "satire" or "tongue in cheek" to explain away his misogyny. It's just naked horror and blind rage. I had a lot to say about my conflicted opinion of Em when we drew his first album, and I'll just leave it at that.

Only gave it one listen. Rather pedestrian I thought. But was just listening to it on YouTube so the fidelity was that of a old AM transistor radio

Yeah. It wasn't bad. But it was definitely not a modern classic.

I did that with one of the 1000 albums one day. Didn’t realize I was listening to the bonus disc. Was about 20 remixes of 3 songs

I love John Hughes-Ian 80s British New Wave. “Love Plus One” is a bop.

Love Plus One has been stuck in my head for over 40 years now I think.

They took a lot of what was happening in the indie and post-punk sound, sanded it down so it was smooth as glass and repackaged it for the general public with great success.
