The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Jangle pop touchstone. Self-deprecation with perfect pacing. Nihilistic humor. Disturbingly beautiful.
Oroginally gave this a 4/5 in my individual challenge (the first album I was handed), but I feel even stronger about it now. So much so that I bought this last week.

Rating: 4.5/5 [Outstanding]

This is the one that has a place in the collection for several years. I’m slowly resigning myself to the fact that I like the band a lot and will probably end up with all of it on vinyl at some point.

At least it’s only 4 studio albums. Although probably need 2 of the 3 original compilations to mop up the non album singles. The live one at least is kinda not necessary unless you’re a completionist…

I’ve kinda reconsiled myself when it comes to the smiths. I don’t think Morrissey, as odd as he still was, was even close to the enormous bellend he is now, his lyrics and delivery then were spot on and the more I listen to Johnny Marr the more I appreciate just how enormous of a talent he is.

I'm actually not sure if I've ever listened to this one. How is that even possible?
Is it a hot take that I found this album kind of "meh"? I know "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and love that song but the rest was just kind of OK for me. Maybe my problem is that I never really kind into the Smiths so their sound is almost like a caricature of itself to me. If that makes sense.

Didn't Billy Duffy from The Cult give Johnny Marr his first guitar? They were classmates at a Manchester school. She Sells Sanctuary could've easily been a Smith's song.

Hey, fyi. New Manics!!!
Having an alternative cover of an album that's not even out and selling it in a bundle with the "standard version" is certainly an interesting marketing strategy.

I don’t think this is too much of a hot take. I think there are lots of bands like The Sniffs that you had to be there, were very much of a specific time and place. I put Black Flag in that group. Black Flag was a huge impact on me, but if I heard them now for the first time I would be scratching my head wondering what this garbage was.
