The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

What’d I do
I figured you might have some good input on the record for today:

So the Qobuz stream of this sounds old. The One Step sounds amazing and like I am in the club. In fact that’s one of the things I really dig about this album… the aural ambience is astounding. Most live albums are the sonic equivalent of a movie… like I can picture the show but it feels like someone else’s experience. If the lighting in your room is right, you can close your eyes and catch a whiff of the cigarette smoke in the club. There is something immersive about the crowd recording that I’ve never experienced on another live recording.

Then there’s the band just being completely in tune with each other. Even though it’s is Evans’ name on the marquee, it feels like the three are on equal footing.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

“(Doo Wop) That Thing” is an incredible song. I am not as nearly enthused by the rest of the album. I am happy it won Album Of The Year and Lauryn is very talented. This albums is really good but it’s also not really my thing outside of “That Thing”.

Haven't listened to this in a long time, but K have fond memories of it from when it came out. I nearly picked it up on orange wax a few weeks ago when I saw it in the wild, but felt it was a bit too expensive at the moment (was about $50). Let’s see if I’ll regret that after relistening today.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Love the timing of getting this album right after Beyonce becomes the first black woman to win AOTY since this album!

Basically a flawless album. Putting aside any of her flaws as a person she is truly a spectacular artist who has put out two of my favorite albums of all time. The way this album skillfully changes genres, Lauryn incredible talent as a lyricist and vocalist, and a powerful theme/concept leads to this album being a masterpiece. “To Zion” gets my vote for best song on the album but it’s all killer no filler so any track is a solid pick

I blame cds. Artists felt the need to fill 74 minutes waaay to often. Leaving you with 3-4 too many songs and 15 minutes of slightly racist crank phone calls to a pizzeria

I think sometimes it wasn’t even feeling the need. It was the lack of restrictions leading to a lack of self-control. Limits and restrictions are good things, they make you adapt and think and not just throw everything at the page.

Yes and no. The double album in the old sense became the norm and became a single album. Now we have hour long fucking eps because it’s the internet and I said so.

This. Old school records had a flow to them. Dark side works as a side a and a side b and then as a whole album. As opposed to Life of Pablo ever changing stream of consciousness bullshit.

Stream of consciousness can work and when it does, wow. But it takes a genius, there aren’t too many of those. Even Joyce lost the plot with Finnegans Wake.

I have no recollection of when I came to TV on the Radio. All I know is I love them and look forward to Adebimpe’s solo album. This album is great like all of their albums. Hell, maybe I was listening from the get go and they were what drew me back into new music. I really don’t know.
