Day 12 - Staying local.

So, when someone mentions jazz, you immediately think of North Carolina, right? No?

Unbeknownst to many, three of the most important artists in jazz - John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Nina Simone - were all born in NC. Go figure...

Day 12 - Local(ish)

I was kind of torn on this one. Should I play something from Argentina (where I was born) or from Brazil (where I live)?
As I'm woefully out of pace with current acts in both countries, I went with what an older release that I absolutely love. It's been recently reissued and it sounds fantastic.
They're not local-local either, this band is from the Pernambuco state which is over 3000 km from where I live.
It's a mix of local rhythms (maracatu), rock and psychedelia.
Sadly, the lead singer died in a car crash after their second album.
This is their debut.

Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - Da lama ao caos.

Originally from Fairview Heights - which is across the river from St. Louis.

When I was about 10 we moved to a small village near Quincy - my parents bought a funeral home. You can find it in the link...not much else in that "town". And yes...that is my real last name - they still haven't changed the name of it for some reason. (that's a little creepy Google image, tho)

As soon as I could leave for college I spent my late teens/early 20's in the Carbondale area. My wife and I lived in Murphysboro when we sold our house and moved to Oregon after we graduated - we are both Salukis. Although she got her master's and doctorate in the time I only got my bachelors, but I'm ok having a sugar mama.

The change from a metro area to the small town thing didn't do me any good. I wasn't a rural farm kid...so I just didn't fit in to that. That was a miserable 8/9 year stretch.

My wife is from Champaign/Urbana - when we visit my in-laws I make sure to get a trip over to Bloomington for record shopping...they still have 3 decent shops.

Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby
Neko, has lived all over but there are two areas that she lived that mean the most to me, the first was the time she spent as a bartender at one of my favorite music venues in Chicago, The Hideout. (Illinois being my former home state); The second is the town where she grew up, a town that would become my adopted hometown, Tacoma! The song on this album that inspires pride in many Tacoman’s is “Thrice All American”. It does a good job of summing up life in the “dusty old jewel in the South Puget Sound”

LOL, Mother Murphy’s, Main St. and Waiting Room records.

That’s great! It’s a small world. Illinois is a great place to be from but I would be hard pressed to head back to the prairie. My SO is originally from Springfield too. We moved out to Tacoma about 7 and a half years ago and fell in love with the place. We still get back to Illinois often though due to pretty much all of our families still residing in the state.

Reverberation Vinyl is also a good store - he has some obscure stuff that doesn't seem to fit with Central Illinois. I haven't checked out Mother Murphy’s, but if it's open next time I go back I will.We go back every 2 years...but we only have her mom and step-dad to visit, so it's usually a short trip.

This past trip my wife and daughter wanted to see the Lincoln museum in Springfield. That gave me a little time to check out Recycled Records. They were ok 20 years ago, but now not so much. One guy there still remembered me after 20 or so years...which I found odd...but my wife tells me I am very memorable being 6'5" 300+ lbs with chops.

Yeah, Reverberation is great too. I got some good deals there, the owner is a music nut and it resides right near one of my favorite local bars, Mugsy’s.

I purchased my first records from Mother Murphys (though it is more of a head shop than a record store). It’s right next to Waiting Room and Main St. so it makes for a nice little stretch when record shopping.

I watch his flipping of his "what's new" bins hoping some of it is still there the next time I go.
One of the first times I went digging there he actually lowered the price on a couple records in my “maybe” pile because I wasn’t familiar with the artist and he really wanted me to check it out. Good guy, super into music.

Radiation City - Synesthetica

A (now defunct) indie pop/synth pop outfit from Portland. Only three albums and two EPs in their discography. Their final full-length was their only entry on the Polyvinyl label. A fun listen.
