The Return of The Mixtape - the September 2024 Spin Challenge!

Day 10 - The Walkman
Play something that goes well with a walk, run or workout.

Can - Soundtracks (Mother Sky)
A great motorik (translates to motor skill) song by the pioneer of the steady 4/4 drum beat, Jaki Liebezeit. A brisk 14 minute track.

I had several Walkman knock-offs in the early 80s before I bought my first yellow Sony Sports Walkman, with student loan money no less. That thing was a constant through several years of my university life. Loved walking around Victoria and then Vancouver in my own personal soundtrack bubble.

Day 10 - The Walkman

When I started my live taping career in the mid 80's, most of the bands I saw weren't exactly welcoming to audience recording. That meant getting in and doing the deed had to be done on the down low. For those stealth situations, there was a high-quality cassette walkman that packed fidelity and features into a compact size.

I can't count the number of shows I strolled into with this hot little number stuffed down the front of my pants...

The Sony WM-D3 was a little gem. Less than half the size of the D6 and not much bigger than a cassette, it still packed Dolby B, the ability to record on chrome bias tape, a VU meter that doubled as a battery meter and manually adjustable record level. This is the one I bought back then. Proud to still have it.

I'm going to a live record that maintains the energy from start to finish, great for high intensity activity.

I'm also gonna link one of my own stealth live recordings, made with the deck pictured above and taped on the same tour comprising this live LP. I was in the 5th row just left of center. Security stared me down all night. I felt sure they knew I was taping. Everyone stood for the whole show, and I'd sit down when I needed to flip tape. I remained steadfast and put on a good show - clapped without actually clapping, yelled without a sound, etc...

This was one incredible night...

Day 8 - LORAN brand tapes

Getting COVID this weekend wiped me out so I wasn't spinning anything. But this one has been burning a hole in my pocket since @Ethos99 sent me this killer pif last week. It's not as much of a tank jacket as some others, but it's unique and has some fold out sides. Plus the record is a tank in itself. Listening now and I'll probably need to spin this again tomorrow to figure out what track to add to my mix tape.

Shellac - at Action Park

Day 7 - Copyright infringement
Some record stores like Toronto’s Play de Record became the pinnacle of local club scenes and promoted local emerging artist by selling their mixtapes. Unfortunately, the samples on these tapes are not usually cleared, which is copyright infringement and can lead to legal troubles like the infamous RCMP raid and lawsuit against Play de Record and Traxx in 2000. Eugene Tam of Play de Record nevertheless remains one of the top architects of the Canadian club and hip-hop scene. And he’s a pretty nice guy if you get the chance to meet him. -See Drop The Needle (directed by Rob Freeman, 2022).
Play something that references skirting of the law, preferably for noble reasons.

The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic

For the track "Breakin' the Law."

The Brooks "Any Day Now"

Following-up on Montreal-Haitian Kaytranada with more local Montreal funkiness by The Brooks. Love the drawn illustration of the cover on this. Going with the track "Drinking" for the mixtape.
